The School: De Lucy Primary School

Year 6 from De Lucy Primary School in Greenwich have just started the Active Minds lesson-time project which will see them leading a fitness class for younger students. Today’s visit to Berkeley Group was an excellent opportunity to stretch their Leading and Sharing Ideas skills and why these skills are important in the world of work and the construction sector.

The Business: Berkeley Group, London

The Berkeley Group build homes and neighbourhoods with a focus on creating beautiful, successful places in London and the South of England. The Berkeley Group work together with other people to tackle the shortage of good quality homes, and make a lasting contribution to the landscape and to the communities they help create.

The Berkeley Group is made up of five autonomous companies: St George, St James, Berkeley, St Edward and St William. The Group is publicly-owned and listed on the London Stock Exchange as a FTSE 250 company.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

After meeting their helpers from Berkeley Group and learning all about the Royal Arsenal development (which will take another 15 years to complete) students were welcomed by Berkeley Directors on a wonderful office tour. Having asked lots of great questions and unpicked some of the many roles within a development of this size, the students were set on their challenge.

The area of Bogsby has an empty brownfield site in the centre of the community. The challenge was to redevelop the land and create a space that would benefit the local people and the environment. Before Sharing Ideas and deciding on what they were going to construct, teams needed to look at the needs of the people of Bogsby and ensure that the new development was environmentally friendly. After building a model of their planned building, the teams ended the day by Presenting their ideas to a judging panel.

The Results:

It was great to see students growing in confidence and develop a professional manner when introducing themselves to adults they did not know. On the challenge, teams needed to race against the clock and demonstrate effective leadership to break down each task and allocate roles to team members. With support and feedback from Berkeley volunteers all four teams completed comprehensive plans for the Bogsby redevelopment.

Some teams excelled in solving the complex transport needs of the area while others gave personal touch by naming streets and features after their team members. The day culminated with each team presenting to guest judges: The Director of Operations and The Director of Construction.

What they said:

  • “This was a well planned day full of hands-on activities. The support from EE and Berkeley Group was fantastic and students learned a lot about the world of work and the different roles within construction.” – Teacher, De Lucy Primary School
  • “We all know how important teamwork is so it’s great to see these student working on these skills from a young age. This approach teaches the students the skills employers look for. Volunteer, Berkeley Group
  • “The challenge today covered all the main things we would consider in planning a development – Volunteer, Berkeley Group
  • “Being a leader was fun because I got to help others” – Student, De Lucy Primary School
  • “When I was a leader I started by just telling people what to do but I learned I needed to tell them why as well so they knew why it was important” – Student, De Lucy Primary School

Thanks to Berkeley Group for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from De Lucy Primary School for coming along.
