The School: Gifford Primary School

Gifford Primary School, based in Northolt, are in their first year of Enabling Enterprise. This year, the school are focusing on developing the enterprise skills of their Year 5 students, through projects, a challenge day and today’s trip. In January, these students took part in the Day in Politics challenge day – forming political parties in their teams and debating key policy issues from around the country before participating in a tight election!

The Business: BBC Worldwide, London

BBC Worldwide Limited is the main commercial arm and a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). They have offices all over the world and work to sell content such as BBC Planet Earth to different countries. The students were joined by 6 volunteers from BBC Worldwide to support them in Working in a Team and Problem Solving on their enterprise challenge.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The teams learnt how large organisations such as the BBC have many different departments, from Advertising to Finance, Catering to Community and Sustainability. Today they would take on the role of recruiters from the BBC’s Human Resources Department. There were 3 vacancies available and the teams had to quickly understand what was required for these roles, work out what makes the perfect BBC employee and then carefully select the best 3 candidates from 6 interviews. At the end of the day, the teams presented their selections and reasoning to a panel of BBC judges.

The Results:

The teams quickly transformed into HR department, Working in a Team and Listening Carefully to each other was imperative to help them digest the job and candidate information. Teams disagreed on some aspects of the importance of skills over knowledge when selecting the right person, leaving it sometimes necessary for one student to have a go at Leading their group to a decision. After much thought and deliberation, the teams were ready to conclude the day with persuasive presentations explaining their Problem Solving. The students were initially nervous but showed great confidence when they presented their ideas, particularly those that Aimed High by presenting without any notes! What swung it for the winning team was their respectful Sharing of Ideas throughout the day, and the natural rhythm of their confident presentation. A huge well done to all the Year 5 students who took on the Recruitment Race Challenge and succeeded!

What they said:

  • “The resilience has shone through the day, they showed they can work as a team regardless of academic ability or personality difference” – Teacher, Gifford Primary School
  • “Fantastic presentations, great to see team mates helping each other speak when they got nervous” – Volunteer, BBC Worldwide
  • ” Everyone had a turn speaking and we were all quiet and listened carefully to what they had to say ” – Student, Gifford Primary School

Thanks to BBC Worldwide for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 and from Gifford Primary School for coming along.
