The Schools: Heartlands Academy and South Nottinghamshire Academy

Heartlands Academy located in Birmingham is one of Enabling Enterprise’s longest standing partners in the Midlands, having delivered enterprise education to their students since 2011. South Nottinghamshire Academy in Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, are in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Both sets of students, Year 9s, from Heartlands and Year 10s from South Nottinghamshire Academy, arrived at PwC eager to find out more and ready for a challenge!

The Business: PwC, Birmingham

PricewaterhouseCoopers is the world’s largest professional services firm, providing advice and support for businesses in anything from taxes to dealing with climate change. They have a wide range of clients, including, Debenhams, Tesco, Samsung, Sony and Barclays. They also oversee the balloting process for the Oscars!

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

In mixed school teams, the students were challenged to become stock market traders, working on behalf of a client. After researching six companies and considering the clients’ desires and ethics, each team collectively decided where and how much of their clients cash to invest. Breaking news affected the share prices of the companies leading to both profits and losses for the traders.

The Results:

After three rounds of trading, each team presented their investment portfolio to a panel of judges, comprised of expert volunteer employees from PwC. The presentations revealed that the teams had analysed the information brilliantly and made calculated decisions collectively. Where bigger risks had not brought the results hoped for, the students excelled at staying positive and aimed high to make sounder investments next time. The volunteers from PwC were impressed with every team; not only were they incredibly successful traders, making huge amounts of money for their client, but more importantly, they demonstrated fantastic enterprise skills.

What they said:

  • “I think it’s really good that this challenge has been pitched in such way that’s it’s accessible to all. I can see all of our students excelling. This is brilliant preparation for their work experience which is around the corner. Working with students whom they have never met before simulates the workplaces they will go into where they won’t know anyone. It’s a real boost to their confidence.” – Teacher, South Nottinghamshire Academy
  • “I’m glad we rotated around as it was really enjoyable working with all of the students. In the afternoon I went back to the group that I worked with at the start of the day. Their improvement was remarkable, their confidence had improved so much.” – Volunteer, PwC
  • “I want to go into business or law, so I’ve enjoyed experiencing the business world today. I’ve learnt making quick decisions and taking risks is integral to success in business.” – Student, Heartlands Academy

Thanks to PwC for such a great trip day, and to the Year 9 students from Heartlands Academy and the Year 10 students from South Nottinghamshire Academy for coming along. It was a pleasure to work with you all!
