The School: Ash Green School

Ash Green School, Coventry is a member of the Creative Education Trust. This Chocolate Challenge was the first challenge day that Enabling Enterprise have set for Year 7 students and expectations were high following great representatives of the school visiting businesses such as IBM earlier in the school year.

The Challenge: Chocolate Challenge

Teams of no more than five students were challenged to come to the aid of a struggling Traditional Chocolate Company and design a new product aimed at 11-14 year olds. A gap in the market had been identified– chocolate boxes for teenagers and so teams worked together to conduct market research to find out what their target market wanted from boxes of chocolate, then shared ideas and used their imaginations to design, model and brand these exciting new products – all within tight deadlines, mirroring the work place!

The Results:

The challenge was met with great enthusiasm across the year group. The students exercised their creativity and clearly thought carefully about the target market, for example by designing boxes shaped like laptops, IPhones and games console controllers. The students also excelled at staying positive in the face of challenges caused by the tight deadlines and need to cooperate and delegate within teams. At the end of the day, each team persuasively presented their product – aiming for their box of chocolates to be selected as the one that the audience would part with their hard earned cash for! The presentations revealed cohesive, hard-working teams that had aimed high to create fantastic, inventive products.

What they said:

  • “I am loving this, it is so important to encourage the children to be more entrepreneurial and come up with ideas. I am seeing their more creative sides that I don’t usually see. I am also very impressed at how well they are getting on with children they don’t usually work with.” – Teacher, Year 7
  • “I came in today not knowing what to expect…I wasn’t too optimistic… but I completely misinterpreted the day. I’m a very creative person so I’m really enjoyed the creative elements of the challenge. Thank you.” – Student, Year 7
  • “One of the teams I am overseeing were quite ‘dysfunctional’ earlier. They’ve transformed! They’re now working together really well – problem solving, sharing ideas and having fun!” – Teacher, Year 7

Well done to everyone who was involved.
