The School: Little Ealing Primary School

Little Ealing Primary have been working with Enabling Enterprise for four years to develop eight core enterprise skills in their students. This year they have been doing this through Lesson-Time Projects and next month the whole school will take on the ‘Future Transport’ challenge, designing transport for future generations. But today a group of Year 5 and 6 students were in the spotlight as they came to a local university to stretch their Working in a Team skills in the world of academia.

The Business: University of West London (UWL)

The University of West London (UWL) has campuses in Ealing and Brentford in London, as well as in Reading in Berkshire. The university has strong links with a range of employers and offers courses in subjects from travel and tourism, to nursing, engineering and music. Today the budding entrepreneurs were supported by UWL Ambassadors Sophie, Oli, Kyla and Natasha to hone in on their Using Imagination skills. Let’s find out how they got on.

The Day: University Challenge

After getting into teams and finding out about UWL, the Little Ealing students began the day by researching different areas of the building, courses and societies within the University. An extensive tour of the premises gave them the opportunity to visit a lecture theatre, take a sneak peak at the library and some of the special workshop rooms and studios, giving them a flavour of university life. The teams then returned to tackle their creative challenge with gusto: to plan a new society for the University of West London, making sure it was both unique and popular for a range of students.

The Results:

The Little Ealing teams worked against the clock to design posters advertising their new society, complete with freebie artefacts they crafted within minutes. All of the teams worked really hard and demonstrated the ability to organise themselves on the various mini-challenges they faced throughout the day, which proved how fantastic their Leading skills were. It was brilliant to see how some students had a very inclusive attitude in their ideas for a new society, whilst others were Aiming High with the most imaginative combination of ideas from the wide range of interests that our UWL Ambassadors expressed. The day culminated in a buzzing Freshers’ Fair with all of the Little Ealing enterprising teams confidently Sharing Ideas to the adults visiting their stall, to persuade them to sign up to their society. The UWL judges then had the difficult task of choosing a winning team, but all the students worked so hard that each team was awarded a certificate for the enterprise skills they had showed off.

What they said:

  • “It was a fun activity, the day was very organised and had a clear structure. It was great to have the Uni ambassadors too: they gave a great tour of the university. I think today also gave them a confidence boost and improved their teamwork skills, as well as their speaking and listening when presenting to an audience.” – Teacher, Little Ealing Primary
  • “I really liked the children’s approach to the activity: they were really good at working together.” – Natasha, University of West London
  • “If this team was on ‘Dragons’ Den’, they would convince the Dragons straight away!” – Oli, University of West London
  • “We thought our society was a great way for people to socialise, especially if they have nothing to do at the weekend, or if you’re a bit shy after you’ve been bullied for example, then you can very easily make friends by joining our society.” – Student, Little Ealing Primary

Thanks to the University of West London for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Little Ealing for coming along.
