The School: London Fields Primary

Students at London Fields Primary in the London borough of Hackney have been working with Enabling Enterprise for several years. They have engaged in lots of different challenges with the aim of developing eight enterprise skills: Aiming High, Leading, Listening Carefully, Problem Solving, Sharing Ideas, Staying Positive, Using Imagination and Working in a Team.

So far this year, they have taken part in a whole school Challenge Day called ‘A Day in Politics’. Students formed new political parties, wrote manifestos, designed promotional materials and took part in an exciting hustings. Today was the chance for Year 6 students to venture out of school and visit a top business to apply their enterprise skills in a construction-themed challenge.

The Business: Multiplex ‘The Stage’, London

Multiplex is a leading international property and construction company, with offices across the globe: from Perth, Australia, where it all began, to the UK, Doha, Canada and beyond. Multiplex have worked on projects including the Emirates Towers in Dubai and 100 Bishopsgate in the heart of London’s financial district.

Today, students visited the project office for The Stage development in Shoreditch, East London. This site is being developed on the site of Shakespeare’s Curtain Theatre, where the Bard’s infamous play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was first performed in the 1500s. When finished, the development will include a residential tower, office space, shops and a gym. It will also feature a heritage centre that the community can visit to learn about the site’s Shakespearean history.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

Students began the day by researching Multiplex and the projects in their portfolio. They did this by Listening Carefully to Multiplex volunteers during a series of interviews and through an interactive tour of the office space. They also learnt that Multiplex employees use enterprise skills every day in their work.

Students were then set the challenge of setting up their own mini construction companies. They were shown a brownfield site in Bogsby which is in dire need of a facelift! Teams got to work researching the local community and identifying what local people would want and need from the site. They also considered how to make their development environmentally friendly and accessible for everyone.

The Results:

Throughout the challenge, students demonstrated fantastic Listening skills by asking questions about what they’d heard and by making notes so they could remember key information later on. They also Worked in Teams by taking turns to speak and including everyone’s ideas.

At different stages of the challenge, each person had a chance to become a team leader. They thought carefully about what good Leading looks like: being calm and positive, delegating jobs carefully and ensuring the tasks are finished on time. They also understood the importance of leaders Listening Carefully to different team members to gather their ideas.

What they said:

  • “The students have really stepped up today, being in a professional scenario, working with new adults and children they wouldn’t normally work with has really challenged their teamwork and leading skills and I’ve been so impressed!” – Teacher, London Fields Primary
  • “I think it’s amazing that they can come out of school and do a project like this at a real business.” – Volunteer, Multiplex
  • “I learned how to be a good leader today and got to practise it when we were building our model. It’s hard but fun!” – Student, London Fields Primary

Thanks to Multiplex for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from London Fields for coming along.
