The School: The Winns Primary School

Located in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, The Winns Primary has been working with Enabling Enterprise for the second year in a row. They have been successfully developing eight core enterprise skills in their students through a great range of Lesson-Time Projects and numerous Challenge Days including their recent ‘Level Up!’, where each class competed in a Games Expo to design and sell a brand new video game from scratch, based on their very own school premises and staff. Today was a chance for a lucky few Year 4 and 5 students to put their enterprise skills to the test in the legal sector and take on the roles of professional negotiators.

The Business: Freshfields, London

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP is a leader among international law firms and is a member of the Magic Circle of elite British law firms. Founded in 1743, it is a multinational law firm head-quartered in London, providing business law advice of the highest quality throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the US.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

The teams began their day with an introduction to Freshfields followed by an insightful tour of the premises. This included the different departments and offices and a visit to a very special meeting room on the prestigious Clients’ floor, which had priceless views over London’s skyline. After learning about the differences between criminal law and civil law, the students considered how important Listening Carefully would be in order to achieve success in today’s challenge. They were then introduced to their clients and took on the role of aspiring lawyers, solicitors and negotiators for the day while Working in a Team to prepare their case.

The Results:

Throughout the whole challenge, students were Aiming High as they worked to tight deadlines. It was important for each team to use persuasive language when Sharing their Ideas as they were joined by special judges Daniel and Sam from Freshfields, who helped opposing teams in their negotiations. It was not easy to reach a compromise: in one instance the judge had to call for the case to be taken to ‘court’! The adults still couldn’t resist awarding each team a special enterprise skill certificate at the end of the day since all the students demonstrated so much dedication!

What they said:

  • “It was another great challenge trip, well organised, with enthusiastic EE staff who interacted well with the children and challenged them to achieve the enterprise skills. I think Charlotte was fantastic when conducting the tour. She made all the different job opportunities sound achievable. I think the children learnt that law firms were not just full of lawyers.” – Teacher, The Winns
  • “I was surprised at how quick-thinking they were and how well they responded to each other’s prompts.” – Daniel, Freshfields
  • “I didn’t do this sort of thing at school. It’s a really good activity and these are great skills to teach.” – Sam, Freshfields
  • “We have chosen this compromise because it is the best offer for both clients.” – Student, The Winns

Thanks to Freshfields for such a great trip day, and to Years 4 and 5 from The Winns Primary School for coming along.
