The School: Claycots Primary School (Town Hall Campus)

Claycots Primary School, based on the Town Hall Campus in Slough, Berkshire, are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. The school is a place that has purpose and relevance for the children of today preparing to be the leaders and citizens of the future. The Year 5 teachers were very excited for Claycots’ first experience of Enabling Enterprise, as students embarked on an intergalactic challenge to really test their enterprise skills!

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

Students from Year 5 stretched their Working in a Team skills through a series of activities to set up a new society on a distant moon, Utopia. Teams displayed Leading, Problem-Solving and Staying Positive skills as they took on the role of recruitment managers, designers, architects, builders and advertising executives to complete their tasks as they selected their crew members, designed a new species of animal and planned the capital city. The teams then used different modelling techniques to build a scale model of their new city to present to prospective new citizens at the Intergalactic Trade Fair. After each stage of the challenge, teams reflected on how well they had used their enterprise skills individually and as a group, and Aimed High to set themselves targets.

The Results:

Throughout the day, it was brilliant to see the Claycots students working together so effectively by encouraging each other and making sure they Listened Carefully to each member of their team. It was also impressive to see the students’ imagination in action as they designed and built very creative Moonbases that they were all rightly proud of!

The teams developed a really strong sense of what it means to work collaboratively on a project and learnt a huge amount about different jobs, careers and places of work in the process, all the time with huge smiles on their faces! It is clear how important the enterprise skills are to the students’ Year 5 and 6 Horizon ethos of reaching for the stars and preparing themselves for their future.

What they said:

  • “Today I have been proud of how much my team and I have really aimed high to do our very best!” – Student, Year 5
  • “It’s been great to see children’s confidence improve over the course of the day as they challenged themselves to do things outside of their comfort zone.” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “We had some disagreements over the day but reminded each other of how we must listen and let people share their ideas.” – Student, Year 5

Well done to everyone who was involved for such a fantastic day!
