The School: Myton School

Myton School, Warwick, working with Enabling Enterprise have been developing Enterprise Skills through lesson time projects, challenge days and trips to businesses. For the students who came along on the trip to IBM, it was their first chance to show off their Enterprise Skills in the world of work.

The Business: IMB, Warwick

IBM is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world. It now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems far more than on producing hardware.

The Challenge: Tech-xperts

Students were greeted with a very warm welcome from IBM volunteers and were encouraged to approach the day as young professionals. This appealed to the highly engaged and motivated group of Year 7, 9, 10 and 12 students from Myton, who quickly grasped the opportunity, introducing themselves and quizzing the ‘IBMers’ about their jobs, responsibilities and the skills they needed to draw upon in the workplace. A tour of some of the facilities enabled the teams to identify potential barriers faced by the employees when communicating with colleagues and clients – so with the challenge brief shared; to design an app to aid communication for employees at the IBM, teams responded efficiently to demonstrate their solution focussed approaches.

The Results:

Working to tight deadlines, teams collaborated to communicate clearly their creative app ideas to help solve a problem faced by ‘IMBers’. The final presentations were very strong with a good amount of healthy competition between the teams, and highlighted just how cohesive the teams had become throughout the day. It left the IBM expert judges with a difficult task: deciding on a winner.

What they said:

  • “I think the teams have worked really well today. It’s been great to see them being challenged and working outside of their friendship group.” – Teacher, Myton
  • “I was impressed with how advanced their thinking was and the level of detail they included in their presentations. I think the mixed age groups helped; we saw some really good teamwork.” – Volunteer, IBM
  • “It’s been so great to look around and actually see what’s inside the building! I want to work here!” – Student, Year 7

Thanks to IBM for such a great trip day, and to Myton School for coming along.
