The School: St Mary Magdalene CofE Primary School

Based in Southwark, St Mary Magdalene CofE Primary School are working with Enabling Enterprise for the second year running. After a highly successful Greetings Card Challenge last year, the students were once again ready to develop their primary enterprise skills with a particular emphasis on Sharing Ideas and Working in a Team at Multiplex.

The Business: Multiplex, London

Multiplex is a leading global contractor with expertise across the entire property sector, delivering landmark property and infrastructure assets for more than 50 years. They are currently working on a number of projects across London, and employ over 3,500 staff. Today, Year 3 were assisted by Sal, the Community Engagement Manager and Joyce from the Contracts Team.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

The Year 3 students of St Mary Magdalene CofE were given a huge task of working as construction companies to take on the Brilliant Build primary enterprise challenge. The area of Bogsby has an empty site in the centre of the community. Working in a Team, the challenge for the students was to redevelop this land and create a space that would benefit the community and the environment. Before Sharing Ideas and deciding on what they were going to construct, the teams also needed to look at the needs of the people of Bogsby and ensure that the new development was environmentally friendly. After building a model of their planned building space, the teams then ended the day by Presenting their ideas to a judging panel.

The Results:

Showing great Leading and Using Imagination skills, the teams were quick to design and build their visions of Bogsby town centre. Different teams valued certain voices and concerns of the community, providing the judges with a vast variety of plans and developments. The judges were very impressed by the standards of the presentations and redevelopments plans. Well done to every team for their hard work and fantastic Aiming High skills.

What they said:

  • “Building their 3D town helped to consolidate what they had learned from the Multiplex team.” – Teacher, St Mary Magdalene CofE
  • “Enabling Enterprise are opening children’s eyes at an early stage. They are showing them what happens in the workplace and starting the development of the skills they will need to be successful within it.” – Volunteer, Multiplex
  • “During the tour I saw how hard the builders were working. I want to do well, so I also need to work hard.” – Student, St Mary Magdalene CofE

Thanks to Multiplex for such a great trip day, and to Years 3 from St Mary Magdalene CofE for coming along.
