The School: Nottingham Academy Primary

The Nottingham Academy is multi-site school that educates children from the ages of three to nineteen. The Year 5 pupils that attended this trip attend the Sneinton Boulevard site, near Nottingham city centre. This trip is the first time that students from The Nottingham Academy have worked with Enabling Enterprise.

The Business: Brewin Dolphin, Nottingham

Brewin Dolphin is one of the UK’s leading providers of personalised, discretionary wealth management services, offering investment management and financial planning services to investors and intermediaries. With origins dating back to the mid-18th century, they were one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have 28 offices throughout the UK & Ireland and have a wealth of experience dealing with investment markets.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

After interviewing volunteer employees from Brewin Dolphin and being taken on an exciting tour of the office, the pupils worked in teams to manage a client’s portfolio. They were given information about four companies that the client could potentially invest in, and then, under timed conditions, had to decide how much of the client’s money to invest in which companies. After the investments were made, breaking news was announced which affected the share prices and caused the teams to earn or lose money for their client. This process was repeated twice more, with the children receiving new information about the companies each time before deciding what and where to invest.

The Results:

Due to considering and Listening Carefully to the information provided and Sharing Ideas well, the teams’ investments were very successful. The final presentations of their portfolios revealed huge positive returns for their client. Throughout the day, all of the children worked well in their teams and developed their ability to stay positive in the face of problems and setbacks, especially due to their increased understanding of the risky nature of trading.

What they said:

  • “It’s great to get the children into a workplace, especially one that is not especially well-known and accessible to them. As I have a long-standing interest in investments, I’m really enjoying it!” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “I enjoyed seeing the children develop throughout the day. In the beginning, many were unwilling to speak – a huge contrast to the excellent presentations at the end of the day.” – Volunteer, Brewin Dolphin
  • “I think our team work skills were very good. We also aimed high as we risked large amounts of money. It was exciting!” – Student, Year 5

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin Nottingham for such a great trip day, and to the Year 5 pupils from The Nottingham Academy Primary Phase that attended and gave their all to the challenge.
