The School: London Fields Primary School

London Fields Primary School in Hackney are currently in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Earlier this year, the whole school participated in a Challenge Day where students delved into the world of politics by creating political parties from scratch, running an electoral campaign, complete with party manifestos and an election – all in a day! Today was a great opportunity for 18 students from Year 6 to practise Problem Solving and Staying Positive ahead of their Work Week coming up.

The Business: Societe Generale, London

Societe Generale is a French multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in Paris. They are one of the largest European financial services groups. As a universal bank, Societe Generale not only offers Retail Banking in France but also International Banking, Financial Services and Corporate and Investment Banking, worldwide. The Year 6 students were lucky enough to be joined by 8 expert volunteers, from a variety of different roles and offices, who not only offered guidance while trading but also offered valuable insight into what it takes to work at Societe Generale.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

The London Fields students began the day by learning all about the Stock Exchange before taking on the role of Stock Market traders. Our busy traders were soon introduced to their client, scientist Dr Taylor, who placed her trust with each team to help her make a large return on her £25,000 initial investment. Each group used their Listening Carefully skills to make notes on Dr Taylor’s personal needs before conducting research into four different companies they could potentially invest her money in.

The Results:

This group of Year 6 students were really excited to take on the world of finance and become traders – they even got to visit the Trading floor at Societe Generale in the morning! It was clear that these students are familiar with the Enterprise Skills in how they approached the challenges over the course of the day. Adults from the school, their teacher and the volunteers were particularly impressed with the insightful questions that were being asked throughout the day about Societe Generale, the world of finance and the employees.

With a focus on Problem Solving and Staying Positive, the teams were really keen to make as much money as possible for Dr Taylor. In particular, the teams demonstrated excellent Staying Positive by offering words of encouragement when investment decisions didn’t quite go to plan or when the profits weren’t quite as high as they expected. At the end of the day, each team was recognised for their hard work with a special thank you from Societe Generale.

What they said:

  • “I can’t thank you all enough, it has been such a great day for them all – I have already heard the students talking about how excited they are to go university together and come and work here.” – Teacher, Year 6
  • “This definitely beats being in the office!” – Volunteer, Societe Generale
  • “The experience has really encouraged them to think in different ways and puts what they are learning back in school in a relevant scenario.” – Volunteer, Societe Generale
  • “I am proud of my team for staying positive because it doesn’t matter if we didn’t make the highest return for our client, we had a lot of fun and worked together.” – Student, Year 6
  • “I liked that we got to speak to different people and learn about how they got their job here.” – Student, Year 6

Thanks to Societe Generale for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from London Fields Primary School for coming along.
