The School: Queen’s Park High School

Queen’s Park High School (QPHS) in Chester is working with Enabling Enterprise for the first time this year. Their programme got off to a great start back in April when their Sixth Form completed a highly successful ‘Commit to Confidence’ Challenge Day. Today, the Year 7s had their first opportunity to work with Enabling Enterprise and to meet the school’s key partner Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

The Business: Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Chester

Bank of America Merrill Lynch is one of the world’s largest financial institutions, serving individual consumers, small- and middle-market businesses and large corporations with a full range of banking, investing, asset management and other financial and risk management products and services. Their Chester office is located just outside the centre in the city’s business park. It was fantastic to be able to bring the students to such a large employer just a few miles from their school.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

Problem Solving and Staying Positive were the key skills the pupils needed to rely on as they tackled ‘Trading Triumphs’. Right from the start, volunteers and Year 7 students alike threw themselves into the day and showed they were amazing at Being Creative, building tall and stable shoe towers, giving themselves inspirational team names and asking relevant and insightful questions as they went on a tour. But soon it was time to get down to business and use their Listening and Understanding skills in order to learn about the client and the companies they could invest their money in. As the challenge progressed, the students continued Aiming High throughout the day, completing the tasks under tight deadlines and reflecting on how they were using their skills to succeed.

The Results:

The final aspect of the day was Presenting their outcomes to the judges. This gave the teams the opportunity not just to say what they had done but also to explain how they had developed their skills. It was fantastic to see how much they had grown in confidence since they’d arrived and how proud they were of what they had achieved through Working in a Team. Each of the pupils had the opportunity to show that Leading was part of their skill set and had a new-found confidence that they could take back to school.

What they said:

  • “I’ve been at QPHS for ten years and I am really proud of the students today and what they have achieved.” – Teacher, Queen’s Park High School
  • “We were so impressed with the progress over the day and the students’ level of engagement.” – Volunteer, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
  • “I’m really proud of the presentations we did today and it made me realise that speaking in front of people isn’t that bad and if I can do it here, I can do it back at school.” – Student, Queen’s Park High School

Thanks to Bank of America Merrill Lynch for such a great trip day, and to Year 7 from Queen’s Park High School for coming along.
