The School: Morecambe Bay Community Primary School

In their second year working with Enabling Enterprise, Morecambe Bay Primary have student engagement and skills at the heart of everything they do. Lesson Time Projects and Challenge Days, such as their recent ‘Future Transport’ are supporting some real development in the students challenge skills and this group of 20, Year 5 pupils were ready and raring to take their next steps into the world of Enterprise.

The Business: NatWest, Manchester

National Westminster Bank Plc, commonly known as NatWest, is the largest retail and commercial bank in the United Kingdom. Since 2000 it has been part of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, ranked among the top 10 largest banks in the world by assets. Their impressive office in in the Spinningfields area of Manchester was the venue for today’s activities and a fantastic group of volunteers from departments across the company were ready to aid the students in a tricky challenge.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The students worked in teams to hone their ability in two of the key enterprise skills with the support of the volunteers. Focusing on Leading and Problem Solving, the students learnt about the role of Human Resources and were set the task of recruiting 3 new staff members to join departments within an expanding organisation, meaning it was vital to use the skills of Aiming High and Staying Positive as they were challenged to take part in the fast-paced challenge.

The Results:

After leaning all about the volunteers and NatWest, the teams knuckled down, assessing the needs of the business, designing the perfect employee and making tough decisions on which of six candidates would be successful in the three job roles. The day culminated in a series of presentations from the teams, each presenting four times to four different judges, assessing and improving their delivery, pitch after pitch.

What they said:

  • “It was fantastic to see what the children achieved today. We were so surprised by how well they did.” – Teacher, Morecambe Bay Community Primary School
  • “The students were amazing, so engaged. I think our staff could really learn a lot from these kids.” – Volunteer, NatWest
  • “I’m proud of how we worked with new people, people who we’ve not worked with before.” – Student, Morecambe Bay Community Primary School

Thanks to NatWest for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Morecambe Bay Community Primary School for coming along.
