The School: Petts Hill Primary School

Petts Hill Primary School in Ealing are in their first year with Enabling Enterprise. This year they are developing key enterprise skills in their students, having done a ‘Crime Scene‘ Challenge Day in September and Lesson Time Projects, including Making News and Gallery Opening. Students from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 were then able to take these skills and put them to use in a business environment.

The Business: General Electric, London

GE builds appliances, lighting, power systems and other products that help millions of homes, offices, factories, airlines and retail facilities around the world work better. They are well known for their partnership with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games where their products were used in every sporting venue in London and across the UK to help build a sustainable Olympic Games.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

Petts Hill Primary School Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students began the day learning about General Electric by interviewing employees of the company and discovering what the role of Human Resources is. General Electric later revealed they were looking to hire three highly skilled candidates to fill vacancies in their workforce. After listening carefully to the candidate’s interviews, the students working in a team set up their own human resources departments to research and hire the best candidates for the job. The students needed to use their Problem Solving and Leading skills to research and understand the roles, before hiring the three best candidates.

The Results:

Each team Aimed High and Stayed Positive to research the job descriptions for the three job roles. They used their Problem Solving skills to choose the best candidates and then began on their persuasive presentations. The pitches impressed the judges who commented on the excellent skill development they had seen throughout the day. Each team demonstrated skills such as creativity and using their imagination and were awarded skill certificates. The day ended with a tour, which included a visit to the Crow’s Nest in the Ark building at General Electric where the students were able to see the whole of London!

What they said:

  • “The students had a fantastic chance to use their skills from the challenge day and projects in a real working environment, with some fantastic volunteers!” – Teacher, Petts Hill Primary School
  • “It’s been great, really enjoyed the day and seeing how well all the students worked.” – Volunteer, General Electric
  • “Coming here and seeing the architecture has been cool and I really enjoyed the end when we presented.” – Student, Petts Hill Primary School

Thanks to General Electric for such a great trip day, and to Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 from Petts Hill Primary School for coming along.
