The School: St Gilda’s and St Peter in Chains

St Gilda’s Junior and St Peter in Chains Junior School are both located in the borough of Haringey, North London. This was the first experience of Enabling Enterprise for both schools and was the perfect opportunity for the Year 2 children (soon to be Year 3) to meet and get to know their new ‘buddies’ and teachers at the Junior school and spend the day in their soon to be new school building.

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

Being held on the actual general election day there was a real buzz around the school as 120 children formed 20 different groups in the hall and become politicians for the day. The aim of the day was for each group to form their own political parties and present their vision for the future. First of all the children put their political knowledge to the test in a quiz, then learnt about different ways to vote. It was then time to put their Using Imagination skills to the test by coming up with a manifesto of their ideas to help different areas of society, such as healthcare and schooling before presenting their ideas in their very own hustings.

The Results:

With a mixture of Year 2 and Year 5 children it was fantastic to see how well the older children welcomed the Year 2’s and took them under their wing for the day. There was some excellent Working in a Team and Listening Carefully demonstrated throughout the day and the children were really excited about their ideas on how the country should be run. There were a range of well thought out ideas and great empathy shown towards different groups in society. With the day being so topical to real life political events the children all left with a much clearer idea of what politics is all about and were fired up to go home and watch the real election results unfold!

What they said:

  • “The children have been so interested and focussed today. This has been an excellent idea to help our pupils with the transition to St Gilda’s in September.” – Teacher, St Peter in Chains
  • “I enjoyed the fact that the Year 2’s spent the day with us today. We all used our imagination together. I learnt that politics is important and that blind votes are best so people don’t copy you.” – Y5 Student, St Gilda’s
  • “Today has been really great. I’ve had a whole day in my new school so now I know what to expect and I don’t feel as nervous. Politics is important because it means you have a voice.” – Y2 Student, St Peter in Chains

Well done to everyone who was involved.
