The School: Nelson & Colne College

Nelson and Colne College is a large tertiary college in Lancashire that offers a wide range of A-Level and vocational courses as well as apprenticeships. As part of their Level 2 provision the college runs the Ambitions programme which aims to help the students develop their communication and presentation skills and most importantly their confidence. This is a perfect fit for Enabling Enterprise and we were happy to be back this week to build on the success of Chocolate Challenge earlier this year.

The Challenge: Commit to Confidence

Today the students were given the opportunity to reflect on how confident they feel about the eight enterprise skills and how they can improve on them. We spent time discussing exactly what Problem Solving, Aiming High and Leading actually were and then gave them the chance to put their skills to the test by completing a real world challenge. It was great to see how students have increased in confidence when it comes to discussing ideas and strategies in small groups as well as with the whole room. Their Listening and Understanding skills were being tested throughout the day and they proved themselves to be up to the task by meeting tight deadlines and not giving up.

The Results:

The buzz in the room was palpable throughout the day as the students proved they were experts at Staying Positive and Working in a Team, giving their all to ensure their group complete the task to the best of their ability. Whether Being Creative or Presenting was the challenge, the students supported one another and did themselves proud. They demonstrated their business acumen in their marketing presentations, showed their ability to consider both the perspectives of an employer and employee when acting as HR managers and exhibited their creativity and time keeping skills when the boss kept changing the deadline. It was a great day and fantastic to see how far the students have come with their skills.

What they said:

  • “The students find these tasks challenging but it’s easy to see how much progress they have made since the last challenge day, I’m very proud of them.” – Teacher, Ambitions Programme
  • “It was great to use the skills in context, I haven’t done stuff like this before and that made it interesting.” – Student, Year 12

Well done to everyone who was involved.
