The School: Honilands Primary School

Honilands Primary School in Enfield are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. So far this term the students’ have involved themselves in a special Enterprise Week, completing exciting projects together that have introduced them to the use of important Enterprise Skills. Today would be their first opportunity to see these skills put to use outside their classroom and in the bustling context of an Argos distribution centre.

The Business: Argos Highams Park, London

Argos is a British catalogue retailer operating in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The company trades in over 750 physical stores, as well as online, with around 800 million website visits a year, it is one of the largest high street retailers online in the United Kingdom. Today, students were joined by a team of volunteers who were able to discuss their various responsibilities at this goods hub that operates 24/7.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The Year 4 students worked in teams to learn about the role of Human Resources with the support of volunteers from Argos. They were then set the task of recruiting new staff members to join departments within Argos, meaning it was vital to focus on Problem Solving and Leading as they were challenged to take part in the fast paced aptly named – Recruitment Race.

After learning about the mindset of Human Resources and the various roles the volunteers held at Argos, the four teams then spent some time thinking about what skills and attributes the perfect Argos employee might have, before carefully watching and reviewing a series of video interviews. There were six possible candidates, and this was stretching the teams’ Problem Solving skills as only three positions were available.

The Results:

The teams had to work together whilst Listening Carefully to the candidates and job requirements. Only by Working in a Team and taking it in turns at Leading would they be able to gather all of the information they needed. At the end of the day, after deciding who they thought was the best candidate for each job, they shared their decisions with the hiring committee who decided on the most thoughtful and confident team to win.

What they said:

  • “It was fab seeing the children developing their team work skills and working hard to communicate positively and effectively” – Teacher, Honilands Primary School
  • “Great explaining of decisions from the children in the presentations, very professional” – Argos Highams Park
  • ” We chose our candidate because she was confident, had a big smile on and was the most experienced one” – Student, Honilands Primary School

Thanks to Argos Highams Park for such a great trip day, and to Year 4 from Honilands Primary School for coming along.
