The School: Southgate Primary School

Southgate Primary School, located in Crawley, is an Enabling Enterprise partner school who have completely embraced incorporating primary enterprise skills development into their curriculum. Over the past few years, students from Southgate Primary have been taking part in Lesson-Time Projects and Challenge Days. Today was an excellent opportunity for students from Year 4 to apply what they have learnt in front of real solicitors and their parents.

The Business: Gowling WLG, London

Gowling WLG is a Global 100 legal practice, with over 1,400 legal professionals and a range of dedicated business support teams across 18 cities in the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Today we were joined by six solicitors from a variety of departments including Real Estate and Mergers & Acquisitions.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

Gowling WLG gave the students a warm welcome in London and the children didn’t waste a moment – keen to ask questions and find out all they could about the volunteers’ roles, responsibilities and how they use the enterprise skills in their everyday jobs. A tour of the impressive office facilities followed and the students were buzzing to find out about their law-focused challenge which saw them Working in a Team as top lawyers by arguing on behalf of a client in an information-rich negotiation. Students were Listening Carefully when taught about the legal system and how law firms support companies, corporations and small businesses using a range of soft skills to resolve disputes. To finish, Year 4 had the opportunity to test their Presenting skills to the max in front of the Gowling WLG volunteers.

The Results:

Gowling WLG volunteers, as well as the Southgate staff and parents, were impressed with the way teams collaborated and showed great Listening Carefully skills as they gathered the pertinent information to help them build their cases. Sharing Ideas and Problem Solving skills came to the fore as decisions were made ahead of the negotiation meetings and all agreed that they had needed toAim High to present to the professionals and their peers.

What they said:

  • “The children were very engaged and on task throughout the activities explored. They showed professional behaviour as ‘lawyers’ and developed their teamwork skills.” – Teacher, Southgate Primary
  • “They learnt lots about law, much more than I’d have known at their age!” – Volunteer, Gowling WLG
  • “I wish I could come here every day!” – Student, Southgate Primary
  • “It was great to see the children interested and focused on the task.” – Parent, Southgate Primary

Thanks to Gowling WLG for such a great trip day, and to Year 4, teachers and parents from Southgate Primary School for coming along.
