The School: St Robert Southwell Primary School

St Robert Southwell Primary School, in Brent, have been working with Enabling Enterprise for the past two years to develop enterprise skills and aspirations in their pupils. This trip was a chance for 30 Year 5 students to hone their enterprise skills before undertaking a Challenge Day back in school later in the summer.

The Business: Barratt London, London

Barratt London is a part of Barratt Developments, one of the largest residential property development companies in the UK who provide thousands of new homes every year. This challenge took place at Barratt London’s development in Hendon: Hendon Waterside, an impressive regeneration scheme which will see 2,000 new homes built, alongside new community amenities.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

Today’s challenge required our Year 5 teams to demonstrate brilliant Leading and Sharing Ideas as they were set the task of redeveloping a brownfield site in the town of Bogsby. Before they began planning their development, they were able to get a fantastic insight into the construction industry by interviewing the six expert volunteers who had joined them from Barratt London and going on a tour of Hendon Waterside to see the site at work. Teams showed they had listened carefully by applying all of this new knowledge as they planned and built a model of their Bogsby development, thinking about to make it best fit the needs of the local residents.

The Results:

After demonstrating outstanding team work to help them meet the deadline to build their models, teams were ready to present their ideas to our panel of Barratt London volunteers. The volunteers were hugely impressed by how thoughtful students had been about planning developments which balanced the needs of the community with thinking about how to make it sustainable and environmentally friendly.

What they said:

  • ” We saw new side to some of our students as they took on this purposeful and exciting challenge! Being able to see a development in progress so close to their homes and community was very interesting or them.” – Teacher, Assistant Headteacher, St Robert Southwell Primary School
  • ” Today was a fun-filled and fast-paced day and very worthwhile! Seeing the students work together to plan and present their ideas was fantastic.” – Volunteer, Barratt London
  • “A fantastic experience and so encouraging to see interest from a young age group in an industry where there is a skills shortage. The variety of activities kept all the students engaged. ” – Volunteer, Barratt London
  • “: I’m really proud of my team, we worked really hard and supported each other. Our development had some great features. ” – Student, Year 5, St Robert Southwell Primary School

Thanks to Barratt London for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from St Robert Southwell Primary School for coming along.
