The School: Princess May Primary

Princess May School in Hackney is in their inaugural term as Enabling Enterprise Partner School. Today was their first opportunity for pupils from years 1-6 to demonstrate their enthusiasm for learning employability skills. This term they will continue their development of key primary enterprise skills through Lesson Time Projects such as Number Crunching and School of Design in their enterprise week later in the Summer term.

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

With the upcoming general elections, this seemed the perfect opportunity for the pupils at Princess May to find out a bit more about how the country is run. In A Day in Politics students work in teams to set up and run their own political parties. During the day the pupils practiced debating, decided on their manifestos and then came up with all the promotional materials for their political party. At the end of the day the children in each class took part in a hustings and then the students got to vote for the winning team. During the day the students used their Working in a Team skills and Problem Solving to make quick and fair decisions.

The Results:

The students were clearly engaged and relished the opportunity to take ownership, articulate their opinions and listen to the views of others. Teams impressed with their passionate and informed class debates, as well as some clever and creative campaigns. The day ended with hustings that saw confident speakers Presenting persuasively in order to gain as many votes as possible in the all-important election. Throughout the day so much learning took place and all the pupils left with a deeper understanding of why politics is so important in society.

What they said:

  • “All the teachers agreed that it was so well resourced: it made engaging the children simple.” – Teacher, Year 4 and EE Champion
  • “I learnt that a manifesto is when people write promises” – Student, Year 2

Well done to everyone who was involved.
