The School: Salisbury Primary

Salisbury Primary in Newham, London have been undertaking enterprise work for several years now, with students in Year 3 and Year 4 completing Lesson-Time Projects and exciting Business Trips, while the whole school come together for their annual Challenge Days. Today students in early years, key stage 1 and key stage 2 put their enterprise skills to the test with classes formed into teams of competing Greeting Card companies.

The Challenge: Greeting Cards Challenge

The Greetings Card Challenge is an excellent opportunity for the young entrepreneurs across all school years to take on a real-life business challenge. Working in Teams, they are tasked with designing, making and selling a brand-new range of creative greetings card for Alice Rhodes, CEO of Smiles Card Company. Students think about how much they want to spend on the resources to bring their specific design to life and make a big profit. Key Stage 2 got to take their manufacturing process to the next level with a taster of working in a production line, looking to maximise their output through efficiently Working in a Team. At the end of the day, each team presented their successes and challenges to the class in the last chance to earn some winning Sharing Ideas points.

The Results:

Competition was high amongst the students as they set about Listening Carefully to one another’s ideas and Problem Solving in order to make sure that they met the full demands of all the tasks. It didn’t take long for them to realise that the key to success was Staying Positive and learning from mistakes they made along the way. Teams were very swift to realise that staying focused on the task in hand and Aiming High were what mattered, despite the early challenge of agreeing on a team name. It was impressive to hear them reflect on how they had improved as a team as the day went on and how the importance of Leading the whole team to victory outweighed individual preferences. The students did themselves proud and proved their Enterprise Skills are developing every day.

What they said:

  • “It was excellent seeing the students helping each other to speak when they had problems presenting.” – Teacher, Year 4
  • “We Aimed High for five cards but I’m happy with the four we made that are super pretty!” – Student, Year 3
  • “I think we have definitely been staying positive today, especially when we were running out of time near the end. I didn’t think we were even going to finish 1 card and we ended up with two – and the second one is even better than the first!” – Student, Year 5
  • “They really have learnt about the importance of team work and coming together to achieve something as a group. I am very proud of all their hard work.”- Teacher, Year 1

Well done to everyone who was involved.
