The School: Willow Brook Primary School

Based in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Willow Brook Primary have been developing eight core enterprise skills for the second year running with Enabling Enterprise. Individual classes have taken part in Lesson-Time Projects such as ‘Trash to Treasure,’ turning recycling materials into amazing toys. The whole school took part in the memorable ‘Operation Moonbase’ in the Autumn Term, setting up a human colony from scratch on a distant planet. As part of their enterprise education, Willow Brook have also visited several businesses across London to put those enterprise skills to the test. Today it was all about Working in a Team with Year 3 students in the spotlight.

The Business: Exterion Media, London

Exterion Media is a leading Outdoor Media owner, engaging UK’s urban audiences. Their ads are seen by 47.4 million people every week on London Underground, Buses, at Westfield and on National Rail. Today a range of Exterion Media professionals were on hand to help the students focus on skills including Sharing Ideas, including experts in Human Resources (HR), which was very fitting for today’s challenge. Let’s see how the teams got on.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The Willow Brook students started the day very professionally by introducing themselves to their Exterion Media team. They quizzed the adults about their role and the enterprise skills they use in their day-to-day jobs. The students were then set the challenge of filling vacancies at Exterion Media, including a new finance manager receptionist. A fantastic tour of the offices helped the Primary entrepreneurs gain an insight into the business. The students also enjoyed taking in the amazing views on the London skyline from the rooftop terrace. Back in the room, the four teams of 7- and 8-year olds then spent some time thinking about what skills and attributes the perfect Exterion employee might have, before carefully watching and reviewing a series of interviews. There were six possible candidates, and this was stretching the teams’ Problem Solving skills.

The Results:

After supporting the students fantastically throughout the day, the Exterion team turned into judges for the final part of the challenge. They were particularly impressed by the high standard of the teams’ presentations. Students explained their choices in a buzzing recruitment fair, including reasons why they had selected each candidate and using persuasive language to win over the judges. The Willow Brook students were proud of their final hiring decision as a group, and so it was no surprise that the adults were full of praise when feeding back to the teams.

What they said:

  • “It was good to see the children experiencing different skills and roles during the day. This experience has shown them what it’s like to work in an office and given them an understanding of different roles. I think they’ve gained in confidence and team building skills whilst using their imagination and building upon their ability to share their ideas. I would love to have more opportunities to visit more companies like this!!” – Teacher, Willow Brook
  • “It was great to see the children collaborating and their confident presentation skills. There was a really positive attitude from all the teams.” – Suzy Jordan, Marketing & Commercial Strategy Director
  • “It was immediately clear how passionate Enabling Enterprise is about the programme. I had a clear briefing on my role for the activities so that worked very well. I feel there’s nothing that needs improving – it is very enjoyable to participate. Seeing how enthusiastic the pupils are is a testament to the programme’s success.” – Vicky Griffin, HR Manager
  • “Today I’m very proud we have solved a problem for Exterion Media! I think we have worked very well together.” – Student, Willow Brook

Thanks to Exterion Media for another excellent trip day, and to Year 3 from Willow Brook Primary School for coming along.
