The School: Gilbertstone Primary School

Gilbertstone Primary School in South Yardley, Birmingham is an Enabling Enterprise Partner School. The school is committed to creating as many opportunities as possible for all of their pupils to develop essential enterprise skills through a range of lesson-time projects, whole-school Challenge Days such as ‘Future Transport’ – which they successfully ran in the Autumn Term – and exciting visits to businesses across Birmingham and the Midlands.

The Business: IBM, Warwick

IBM, founded in 1911, is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world, with operations in 170 different countries and over 380,000 employees globally. It now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems and is a major research organisation, constantly evolving and innovating.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

Pupils from year 4 and 5 at Gilbertstone Primary School arrived at IBM Warwick excited to learn about the business challenge that faced them. Split into teams, the children were tasked with researching and designing a new software application to solve a communication problem for employees at IBM. After interviewing our employee volunteers, they were taken on a tour of some of the facilities. This enabled the teams to identify potential issues and barriers faced by the employees when communicating with colleagues and clients.

The Results:

Working to a tight deadline whilst Listening Carefully, Using Imagination and exercising their Problem Solving skills, each team developed a creative solution to the communication problem that they had identified. The final presentations highlighted the great extent of the creativity that the teams had displayed throughout the day and left the IBM Expert judges with a difficult task!

What they said:

  • “Another enjoyable and rewarding day linking the Enabling Enterprise challenge skills to a real-life business situation. IBM really opened our children’s eyes to the world of communication.” – Deputy Head Teacher, Gilbertstone Primary School
  • “A fun and enjoyable time. It was great to see such young children using and learning such valuable skills that we try to use every day in the workplace! Enabling Enterprise is providing a great and important service for schools” – Volunteer, IBM
  • “We had lots of fun and had a great time making our apps. We have gained more confidence in using the enterprise skills and know more about the jobs around us.” – Student, Gilbertstone Primary School

Thanks to IBM volunteers for their expertise and energy on the day, and to pupils and teachers at Gilbertstone Primary School for their enthusiasm and engagement with the challenge. It was a pleasure to work with you all.
