The Schools: St. John and St. James and St. Catherine’s RC Primaries

St John and St James, in the London borough of Enfield, have partnered with Enabling Enterprise for the last 4 years. In that time they have completed numerous Challenge Days, Lesson Time Projects and business trips, including their recent Challenge Day ‘Crime Scene Investigation‘. For this business trip to Metaswitch, some lucky year 3 students were chosen to take part, opening their eyes to the world of work.

Year 5 students from St Catherine’s RC Primary School in Barnet have been developing their Enterprise skills all year through classroom projects such as ‘Going Live’. Today, Year 5 students had the opportunity to further their skill development in an exciting computing challenge!

The Business: Metaswitch, London

Metaswitch is a UK-based company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets telecommunications hardware and software, solving complex communication issues for large organisations.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

The students split into teams to think about how people communicate using technology and apps. They then explored the different barriers companies may face when communicating and had the opportunity to quiz volunteers from Metaswitch about their experiences. They were then given their brief to design an app to aid communication for employees at Metaswitch. Once they had designed their app, its name and logo, they then presented their ideas in a ‘Technology Exhibition’.

The Results:

The students did not waste a moment – keen from the off to find out all they could about Metaswitch and the work of the volunteers who joined them. Questions relating to the business itself, their specific jobs and the essential skills required to work at Metaswitch were explored and a tour of the workplace ensured all students had a flavour of life at Metaswitch. Now armed with valuable information, the students were keen to then get creative. Teams were fantastic at Using Imagination and Working in a Team to come up with innovative ideas such as ‘Talk Global’ which can translate speech and video calls live.

What they said:

  • “The students have come up with some amazing ideas. It is great to see them so engaged in a topic which they can relate to.” – Teacher, St. John and St. James
  • “I love volunteering on these trips and seeing all the fresh and creative ideas they come up with. They keep us on our toes!” – Volunteer, Metaswitch
  • “My favourite thing about today was getting to make new friends with another school. Sometimes I am not confident, but I feel like this has helped me be more confident to share my ideas!” – Student, St. Catherine’s RC Primary

Thanks to Metaswitch for such a great trip day, and to Years 5 and 3 from St. John & St. James CE Primary School and St. Catherine’s RC Primary School for coming along.
