The School: Audley Primary School

Located in Stechford in the suburbs of Birmingham, Audley Primary School has been a Partner school with Enabling Enterprise for the past five years. Pupils have formerly demonstrated great eagerness to apply their enterprise skills to the worlds of learning on Challenge Days in school, but also in the world of work when they have taken part in trips to businesses such as BT, Carillion, Birmingham Markets and, most recently, industrial real estate firm Prologis.

The Business: Gowling WLG in Birmingham

Gowling WLG is a global 100 legal practice, with over 1,400 legal professionals and a range of dedicated business support teams across 18 cities in the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

Working alongside volunteers from Gowling WLG, pupils formed companies of passionate solicitors to represent clients in a highly contentious negotiation task. Working against another team, Aiming High and Staying Positive were crucial as they were given a wide range of key information about their particular case. Listening Carefully and Sharing Ideas helped the pupils to create persuasive presentations to convince the judges of their argument.

The Results:

Working in a Team and Sharing Ideas were skills that showed in abundance as the teams of year 5 and 6 pupils quickly united as companies of solicitors. Problem Solving skills were also clearly on display as each team carefully considered the best outcome for their client. The judges’ decision was made even harder by the pupils’ creative language and powers of persuasion as each team delivered their case against their opposing team. A day of true creativity and resilience!

What they said:

  • “It was an amazing day! I have learnt a lot about being a lawyer; it taught me that responsibility goes together with the job you take on.” – Year 6 pupil, Audley Primary School
  • “The children have learnt so much and demonstrated their skills and enthusiasm; they have been inspired by the volunteers from Gowling and are all thinking of becoming solicitors when they grow up!” – Teacher, Audley Primary School
  • “It was a great event – engaging, interesting and fun! The material was presented at just the right level for the children and they all participated really well. I was very impressed with some of their ideas. Hopefully the whole experience will stay with the children and inspire them!.” – Volunteer, Gowling WLG

Thanks to Gowling WLG for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 and 6 from Audley Primary School for coming along.
