The School: Rotherhithe Primary School

Southwark-based Rotherhithe Primary may be in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise but they have shown real dedication to developing eight core enterprise skills. Whilst some of their Key Stage 1 students have successfully completed the ‘Community Café’ project in lessons, others in Key Stage 2 have taken part in employer visits to top businesses across London to put those skills to the test in the world of work. Today it was the turn of 30 Year 5 students to show off their Problem Solving skills and stretch their enterprise education to the real world of finance.

The Business: UBS, London

UBS is a global bank, providing services in over 50 countries. Specialising in Wealth Management and Global Asset Management they provide services for high net worth individuals, private, corporate, and institutional clients all over the world. Worldwide, UBS employs 60,099 people who speak more than 130 languages and are citizens of 135 countries. Today we were joined by two fantastic volunteers, Raakesh and Glen, who worked with the students throughout the day offering top tips and expert advice.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

Students start the day by learning a little bit about UBS and the roles of our volunteers in an introduction hot seat. The challenge involves learning all about the Stock Exchange before taking on the role of Stock Market traders. Our busy traders were soon introduced to their client, scientist Dr Taylor, who placed her trust with each team to help her make a large return on her £25,000 initial investment. Each group listened carefully and made notes on Dr Taylor’s personal needs before conducting research into four different companies they could potentially invest her money in.

The Results:

Over the course of the day it was great to watch how the students interacted with one another and really applied their Problem Solving skills. It was crucial that they listen to all the information and each other’s ideas to make sure they made wise investment decisions. With a focus on Staying Positive, the teams did not disappoint. They were sharing their Staying Positive top tips with one another to make sure that even when the investment didn’t quite go to plan, they were looking ahead to the next investment opportunity.

At the end of the day, teams stood in front of the judges to present their findings – it was great to observe how well the teams responded to feedback from the teachers and judges in the run up to the presentations. They really put the ideas into practice resulting in some pretty professional presentations!

What they said:

  • “They’ve really enjoyed the day – I can’t get over how absorbed and professional they have been all day!” – Teacher, Rotherhithe Primary School
  • “It’s been such a worthwhile experience for me and I can’t wait to volunteer again next week.” – Volunteer, UBS
  • “I think it’s really special how you have managed to take some complex ideas and break them down into chunks of learning that they understand. Alongside that, this opportunity to develop key skills for the workplace is so important.” – Volunteer, UBS
  • “We Stayed Positive when people disagreed and used Problem Solving skills to find an agreement. We are all super stars because we are kind to each other and understand greatly” – Student, Rotherhithe Primary School
  • “I think the best bit is getting to work in these teams because we’ve been really nice to each other which has helped!” – Student, Rotherhithe Primary School

Thanks to UBS for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Rotherhithe Primary School for coming along.
