The School: Montpelier Primary School

Ealing-based Montpelier Primary School have been expertly developing eight core enterprise skills for three years, not only in school through a range of Lesson-Time Projects and Challenge Days – for example, their memorable Operation Moonbase last year – but also outside the classroom in a series of employer visits to top businesses across London. Today it was the turn of Year 4 students to put their Staying Positive skills to the test in the world of work. Let’s find out how they got on…

The Business: Brewin Dolphin, London

Brewin Dolphin is one of the UK’s leading providers of personalised, discretionary wealth management services, offering investment management and financial planning services to investors and intermediaries. With origins dating back to the mid-18th century, they were one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have 28 offices throughout the UK & Ireland and have a wealth of experience dealing with investment markets. Today, our teams were lucky enough to be joined by Nicole, Elaine and Yatindra from Brewin Dolphin to help guide them through the challenge.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

Problem Solving and Staying Positive were the order of the day as the pupils took on the daunting task of being stock brokers. They needed to make sure they were Listening Carefully to what their client wanted in order to invest in the best companies and make as much money as possible. The students were put through their paces, analysing company profiles, listening to radio broadcasts and keeping up to date with events on social media in order to best maximize their client’s investment.

The Results:

As the stock exchange closed, there was still more work for the teams; now they had to feed back to their client and justify their investment decisions. By Working in a Team and ensuring that everybody took responsibility for explaining what they had done and how they had co-operated together to do it, they all proved that they could excel in Sharing Ideas. The pupils worked hard all day and proved that they have what it takes to stay calm and succeed in the fast-paced world of finance. Although only one team won the challenge, they all excelled in adopting the enterprise skills so each team was awarded certificates. Well done to the budding entrepreneurs!

What they said:

  • “All of the students were engaged and given equal opportunity to listen, discuss and decide. It taught them the importance of making quick decisions by talking as a team and referring to research.” – Teacher, Montpelier Primary School
  • “I have learnt lots today, maybe as much as the kids!” – Volunteer, Brewin Dolphin
  • “We determinedly worked as exquisite traders. We learned how to stay positive and have a jubilant grin on our faces.” – Student, Montpelier Primary School

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin for such a great trip day, and to Year 4 from Montpelier Primary School for coming along and making it so memorable.
