The School: West Hill Primary

Wandsworth-based West Hill Primary School are committed to developing key enterprise skills in their students. They have been working with Enabling Enterprise for the sixth year running through a variety of Lesson-Time Projects and Challenge Days, as well as numerous visits to top employers across London. Today a group of 30 Year 5 students were in the spotlight as they came to stretch their Using Imagination skills whilst Sharing Ideas on a creative challenge in the world of work. Let’s find out how they did.

The Business: White Stuff, London

White Stuff is a British fashion and lifestyle brand that sells women’s and men’s clothing, accessories and gifts in over 100 shops in the United Kingdom. It also has shops in Germany and Denmark and customers can shop via mail-order catalogues and through its website. Today a range of volunteers were on hand to help the budding entrepreneurs bring their project to life whilst supporting them with their professional expertise.

The Challenge: Retail Revelations

The West Hill students were quick to team up despite coming from different classes across the year group and were keen to take their challenge: to create a themed shopping attraction, complete with state-of-the-art technological gadgets, with a view to attract even more customers to the White Stuff stores. In order to do this well, children needed to conduct some crucial market research, which was helped by a fantastic tour of the premises, where students quizzed employees from a variety of departments, getting lots of insights and top tips from White Stuff employees.

The Results:

Back at their tables, the children were really excited to share their ideas with their teammates. They then worked against the clock to design an imaginative mood board for their attraction, before preparing the most persuasive presentations. At the end of the day, the White Stuff volunteers turned into judges who witnessed an incredible amount of confidence, teamwork and creativity in a buzzing Trade Fair where each team pitched to the adults.

School adults, EE staff and White Stuff volunteers alike were truly impressed with the students’ forward-thinking suggestions. For example, some of the tech ideas featured VR headsets, 3D projectors and giant touchscreens which would help customers design their very own clothes. One team even included a snow-themed jacuzzi as part of their innovative flagship store. With such levels of Aiming High it was no surprise the scoreboard was full of points for each team, who walked away with a special skill award for their impressive effort in such a stretching amount of time.

What they said:

  • “The day was very well organised and it was a very friendly and welcoming company! It was great that the children got to question people on their careers and find out about the different jobs in retail – a look behind the scenes at all the different roles behind a store. It was good for them to see that real work can be creative and fun. Also, I liked the constant referral to the skills and why these are important in real life, in workplace situations.” – Teacher, West Hill Primary
  • “The day was brilliant, really good! I was impressed because they understood a lot !” – Volunteer, White Stuff
  • “They were also really mature, they didn’t leave anybody out: even the quieter ones came out at the end. Some weren’t necessarily confident but they all helped each other.” – Volunteer, White Stuff
  • “I must tell my children’s school about this.” – Volunteer, White Stuff
  • “We had lots of imaginative ideas for White Stuff, but we had to share our ideas and compromise to choose one idea to use.” – Student, West Hill Primary

Thanks to White Stuff for such a fantastic trip day, and to Year 5 from West Hill Primary School for coming along.
