The School: Southwood Primary School

Southwood Primary School, in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, have been developing enterprise skills across the school for the past 2 years. Last year, students developed their enterprise skills taking part in their Moonbase Challenge Day. They were looking forward to another day of enterprise this year but unfortunately there had been a terrible crime committed in school. Let’s see if the students of Southwood were able to apply their enterprise skills to solve this dastardly crime…

The Challenge: Crime Scene Investigation

Upon finding out that all of the teacher’s chocolate had been stolen from school, students got down to analysing evidence and discussing the suspects. Back in their class’s, students worked in teams to look at fingerprint analysis, listen to CCTV tapes and discuss suspect statements. The afternoon saw groups, consider all their evidence and prepare police presentations before a shocking confession.

The Results:

It was really great to see how the students developed their enterprise skills over the course of the day. In particular, the students’ passion and enthusiasm for finding clues and evidence was outstanding! Over break and lunch, teams were busy scouring the playground for strands of hair, sweet wrappers and bits of fabric. We were all very impressed with how reflective the students are Southwood were. Not only were they spending their time reflecting on all the evidence they had seen but also they were really thinking carefully about the skills they’d needed in order to solve this crime.

What they said:

  • “Some of the students find it really difficult to explain their ideas but today they have been really thinking about justifying themselves” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “I really enjoyed being a sketch artist today. I had no idea you could draw and be a police officer” – Student, Year 4
  • “I think it’s important that we got to do this and I honestly think I am a better leader now ” – Student, Year 6

Well done to everyone who was involved.
