The School: Kender Primary School

Students at Kender Primary School have been working with Enabling Enterprise since 2013. Year 3 and 4 students have been taking part in lesson time projects such as Number Crunching where they designed new a chocolate brand and pitched to a panel of judges. They are soon to take part in a Challenge Day and apply skills such as Working in a Team and Aiming High in a fast-paced, in-school project.

Today was a great opportunity for Year 4 students to show off their skills in an exciting construction-themed challenge at top business Lendlease.

The Business: Lendlease, London

With over 55 years’ experience, Lendlease is a leading international property and construction company with operations in Australia, Asia, Europe and the Americas. They create positive legacies from funding a project right through to developing and constructing state of the art buildings and infrastructure, including hospitals, roads and bridges.

Today, volunteers from across the business joined Kender Primary students to support them with their challenge.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

Students began the day researching Lendlease and the work they do internationally. They heard about the Athletes Village that Lendlease constructed for the London 2012 Olympic Games. They also went on an exciting tour, which included meeting teams based in the offices and seeing a real-life construction site in action! They learnt that being environmentally friendly is crucial to successful construction.

Back in the boardroom, students were set the challenge of redesigning a brownfields site for the people of the fictional town of Bogsby. They researched the wants and needs of different people in the community and applied their understanding by choosing buildings and areas that would be suitable for everyone. Then they built 3D models of the site, showing off how it would look in reality.

Finally, they prepared and delivered a series of presentations to Share their Ideas with the judging panel, made up of the volunteers from Lendlease.

The Results:

Throughout the day, students showed off their Staying Positive skills as new challenges and problems were presented to them. During the research phase, they demonstrated that they could Listen Carefully by taking notes about the important information that they needed to remember. Lots of team members showed great Leading by organising their team, delegating jobs and making sure each task was finished on time.

What they said:

  • “Children understood the process needed to successfully build a project. It encouraged and strengthened the eight Enabling Enterprise skills.” – Teacher, Kender Primary School
  • “Great day – I’d love to do it again. It was really valuable for students to see what goes on in a real work place.” – Volunteer, Lendlease
  • “Making the model was fun and the hardest part was presenting because we were nervous. My team stayed positive when we had to do challenges.” – Student, Kender Primary

Thanks to Lendlease for such a great trip day, and to Year 4 from Kender Primary for coming along.
