The Schools: Matchborough First School
Matchborough First School in Redditch has worked with Enabling Enterprise for three years, making the most of in-school Lesson-Time Projects, Challenge Days and visits out to different workplaces to learn about, developing and using their enterprise skills.
The Business: Bouygues, Birmingham
Formerly known as Thomas Vale, Bouygues UK has offices and sites across the country and draws on the heritage and support of the Bouygues Group, which operates in over 80 countries, spanning construction, civil works, energy, services, telecommunications and media. Bouygues UK delivers award-winning construction, development and regeneration projects to the most exacting standards from mixed-used commercial developments and schools to luxury apartments and signature public buildings.
The Challenge: Brilliant Builds
A warm welcome from the volunteers at Bouygues to their city centre base for the group of Year 2 children from Matchborough kick started the day. A tour of the offices and the opportunity to ask questions to find out more about life in the building industry meant the 6 and 7 year olds were bursting with ideas for their Enabling Enterprise Brilliant Builds Challenge. Using their creativity and team working skills, teams were tasked with designing and creating not one, but two new buildings in the fictional town of ‘Bogsby’, incorporating the community’s wants and needs.
From the off, the young entrepreneurs were able to use their team work skills in this work place setting and impressed the Bouygues volunteers. Ideas were shared enthusiastically and it was most pleasing to see young leaders come to the fore, encouraging and supporting others. Teams were able to apply what they had learned about the ‘community of Bogsby’ and made sure this was evident in their Brilliant Build presentations to conclude the day.
What they said:
- “Each team has done so well to work together and it was lovely too see them presenting at the end. Some of the children have been really keen to ‘act’ as professionals. It was lovely.” – Teacher, Matchborough First School
- “The children thrived and showed some excellent developing team work skills and problem solving. I was impressed!” – Volunteer, Bouygues
- “I liked the whole day. It was fun. I am tired now – I’ve worked hard!” – Year 2 Student, Matchborough First School
Thanks to Bouygues for such a great trip day, and to Year 2 from Matchborough First School for coming along.
