The School: Court Farm Primary School
Court Farm Primary School in Birmingham began working with Enabling Enterprise this Spring Term, kicking off with a Challenge Day for Year 4 as lesson time projects got underway in school for all classes. Year 6, working on their Active Minds project, specially selected a group to visit University Hospital Birmingham to use their skills in the workplace.
The Business: University Hospital Birmingham
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is the leading university teaching hospital in the West Midlands and is one of the most consistently high performing trusts in the NHS. It is recognised as one of the leading hospitals in Europe and has an international reputation for quality of care, informatics/IT, clinical training and research.
The Challenge: Recruitment Race
Over 10,000 people work at University Hospital Birmingham, keeping the Human Resources Department incredibly busy, so it seemed appropriate for our enterprise teams from Court Farm to offer their support in the Recruitment Race Challenge. Welcomed by UHB’s Matthew Masters, the 10 and 11 year olds learned about the employment opportunities at the hospital and were keen to find out about the different roles, responsibilities and the skills needed to be successful. They then formed their own HR departments – and set about filling vacancies at the hospital with the best candidates for each special job.
Working well together in their teams, students were supported by volunteers from the hospital to demonstrate their enterprise skills as they sought to complete the challenge; considering and matching the right candidates to employment opportunities. Teachers and UHB staff alike were impressed with the super collaboration, excellent engagement and growing confidence of each student throughout the day. The professional presentations from each team, along with the broad smiles at the end of the day, really highlighted the sense of pride in a job well done.
What they said:
- “This is great! Seeing our children in a different environment and responding like this – just brilliant” – Teacher, Court Farm Primary School
- “The children have been amazing – totally focussed and using their enterprise skills. I will definitely volunteer again.” – Volunteer, University Hospital Birmingham
- “I have never thought about working in a hospital before…I don’t like blood, but now I know there are loads of jobs here. I think I would be a great receptionist, welcoming patients and visitors.” – Year 6 Student, Court Farm Primary School
Thanks to University Hospital Birmingham for such a great trip day, and to Years 6 students from Court Farm Primary School for coming along.
