The School: Becontree Primary School

Enterprise skills are important for the students at Becontree Primary School in Barking and Dagenham. This is the second year in a row that they have been committed to enterprise education, which they have developed through a range of Lesson-Time Projects, employer visits to top business across London and whole-school Challenge Days, for example ‘Future Transport’ this term. Students in Year 5 took part in an exciting project called Active Minds, during their enterprise week which involved them creating their own fitness classes.

During this week the Year 5 students demonstrated their full range of enterprise skills in abundance and many have developed these further in the world of work outside the classroom on employer visits. They were given another opportunity with today’s challenge, where students entered the world of construction!

The Business: Lendlease, Stratford

With over 55 years’ experience, Lendlease is a leading international property and infrastructure construction company with operations in Australia, Asia, Europe and the Americas. They employ over 11,000 people.

Lendlease have previously worked on The Olympic Athletes’ Village, BBC Broadcasting House, the Houses of Parliament and the Science Museum and are currently involved with redevelopment work taking place at Windsor Castle. The company focuses on the safety of their employees and the sustainability of their projects.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

After quizzing the volunteers on their roles at Lendlease and how they apply each of the enterprise skills in their work, the students had the chance to go on a fantastic tour of the offices. They got to witness employees Sharing Ideas in important meetings that were taking place across the various departments during the tour, and even had the chance to look at a 3D model of buildings Lendlease employees have developed in the local area.

The teams were then set their challenge for the day: in the area of Bogsby, there is a brownfield site which each team had to redevelop to suit the needs of the community. Students kept Listening Carefully to what local residents wanted and needed, and then applied their best Problem Solving to decide which buildings and public spaces the people of Bogsby needed, before bringing their ideas to life with their carefully-budgeted construction models.

The Results:

The construction of the model for the redeveloped site required excellent Working in a Team skills and, as they had done throughout the day, every team demonstrated great Leading to ensure the model was finished on time. All four teams were truly Aiming High in the complexity and inventiveness of their plans. Staying Positive was paramount when deadlines were tight, but the teams managed to finish on time!

At the end of the day, the students impressed the Lendlease judges immensely with their clear and well-reasoned presentations about what they would do with the Bogsby site. It was fantastic to see every student speaking so confidently about what they had achieved and the enterprise skills they had used throughout the day.

What they said:

  • “It was fantastic to see such great teamwork throughout the day. I was particularly impressed with how well they listened to each other and valued each other’s ideas.” – Teacher, Becontree Primary School
  • “I am so proud of my team! I didn’t think we were going to work well together today, but we have definitely improved on our teamwork and created something really good.” – Student, Becontree Primary School
  • “This day was such a fantastic experience for the children. They have put a smile on our employee’s faces today and seriously impressed us with their teamwork and professional behaviour. I really hope we see them working here in 10 years’ time!” – Volunteer, Lendlease

Thanks to Lendlease for such a great trip, and to Year 5 from Becontree Primary School for coming along and making the day so memorable.
