The School: Holly Park Primary School

Based in Barnet in North London, Holly Park Primary School are a Partner Primary school with Enabling Enterprise and have been developing their students’ Enterprise skills for three years. This year, students have been particularly focussed on improving the skill of Working in a Team through lesson-time projects and some inspiring trips to top businesses including UBS and Argos. Today, the whole school was involved in an exciting challenge day with the aim of being the most successful card company in Holly Park!

The Challenge: Greetings Cards Challenge

‘Greetings Cards’ challenges the pupils’ Using Imagination and Working in a Team skills as together they must choose a theme for their cards, agree on a unique and exciting design and get a production line up and running in order to make and sell as many cards as possible before time runs out! Then, Sharing Ideas becomes even more important as they must pitch to the judges and explain why their card company should be chosen as the winning team, using persuasive and formal language to describe their choices and the challenges they’d faced throughout the day.

The Results:

Competition was high amongst the students as they set about Listening Carefully to one another’s ideas and Problem-Solving in order to make sure that they met the full demands of all the tasks. It didn’t take long for them to realise that the key to success was Staying Positive and learning from the mistakes they made along the way. Early disagreements over team names and which theme to pick were moved on from swiftly as the pupils realised that staying focused on the task in hand and Aiming High were what mattered! It was impressive to hear groups reflect on how they had improved as a team as the day went on and how the importance of Leading the whole team to victory outweighed individual preferences. The students did themselves proud and proved their Enterprise Skills are developing every day.

What they said:

  • “It’s going really well. I was surprised at all the different strategies that each team has come up with: very creative! This is a really good challenge actually – it’s like real life! And the maths element in it is really good, too.” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “We’ve been really good at staying positive because we found it tricky to get the design looking right but we told each other we could do it and helped each other to get it right.” – Student, Year 2
  • “This is the best work my class have produced all year! I couldn’t believe the quality of the cards they made.” – Teacher, Year 6
  • “Today we were great at Problem-Solving when we realised our cards had a few things wrong, but we fixed it and we made them really different from everyone else’s with the shape they have.” – Student, Year 3
  • “When we got stuck in the production line and we couldn’t keep up with other people in the team, we helped each other and we stayed positive – and now we are proud of what we have done!”- Student, Year 3

Well done to everyone who was involved.
