The School: Caister Academy

Caister Academy, in Caister-on-Sea, is in their first year working with Enabling Enterprise. As part of the Creative Education Trusts set of challenge days, students in Year 8 worked in teams to develop their relationships whilst exploring the world of social enterprise. Teams were awarded lots of enterprise skill points, focusing on Problem Solving, Aiming High, Working in a Team and Problem Solving.

The Challenge: Social Entrepreneur

In teams, the students explored the term ‘Social Enterprise’ in preparation for setting up their own social enterprise with a clear mission statement. With no legal definition, it was an opportunity to reflect on their previous experience and knowledge gained from their business studies. After looking at different sectors of society and the specific problems they face, teams were set the challenge of coming up with ideas of how they could help the groups. On top of this, it was crucial that teams established a business plan for how to make their business successful and sustainable.

The Results:

At the very beginning of the day, students were unaware of what to expect and working with students they had not met before. Over the course of the day, it was brilliant to see how team dynamics developed and Leading skills were demonstrated by different team members in different tasks. The challenge culminated in a set of presentations on the stage where teams shared the ideas for their social enterprise. Although this was a daunting task for some, every student joined their team on stage, developing important Presenting skills necessary for the future, regardless of their direction post-18.

What they said:

  • “It’s been so great to see them working in groups that I’ve never seen them I before and the progress made over just one day is really encouraging ” – Teacher, Head of Year 8
  • “I think it’s important that we raise awareness of the problems but that we also think about why these things happen to begin with. Not everyone feels the same way about homelessness so it’s important to think about their perspectives too” – Student
  • “We’ve done pretty well in our teams and I think we deserve to get the Aiming High award – I have tried my best!” – Student

Well done to everyone who was involved.
