The School: Selwyn Primary School

Located near Highams Park, East London, Selwyn Primary is a 3-form entry school who have worked with Enabling Enterprise for two years running. Year 6 have been stretching their enterprise skills in the world of work by visiting employers across London. Next term, Year 4 look forward to developing their enterprise skills even further through their Lesson-Time Project. Today students across the school were Working in a Team on this one-of-a-kind challenge. Let’s see how they got on.

The Challenge: Crime Scene Investigation

It was due to be a regular Thursday at Selwyn today, but students from Year 1 to 5 were called to a special Assembly for a police briefing from the Enabling Enterprise staff, accompanied by people in special suits. The students learnt about the ‘Sugar Snatcher’ and the crime that had been committed overnight. All the chocolate had been stolen from the school, and urgent help was needed to catch the culprit. Students took on the role of aspiring police recruits for the day as their challenge set off with a range of evidence to collect and analyse.

The Results:

Selwyn’s students used their Problem Solving skills exceptionally well to match all the clues and evidence together. Some students were definitely Aiming High when they continued to look for clues at other locations and in break times! At the end of the day, students had successfully worked together to develop their reasons for who they thought the key suspect was. It was clear that they were proud of their detective work and the teachers were too!

What they said:

  • “It’s going really well, and this challenge is really good for their inference skills. Today we’re finding that those children who normally struggle with concentrating are really engaged and focused. They’re loving it!” – Teacher, Year 3
  • “Even though it’s been to do with solving a crime, it’s going to be useful for other aspects of their learning: fact-finding, making deductions… I think it’s brilliant!” – Teaching Assistant, Year 3
  • “We are the best detectives and we should win because we were working in a team by taking turns and because we voted!” – Student, Year 2
  • “I know it’s not real but we are developing real skills we need.” – Student, Year 2
  • “I’ve enjoyed today so much, it’s been criminal!” – Student, Year 4

Well done to everyone who was involved.
