The School: Malmesbury Primary School

Students at Malmesbury Primary in Merton have been developing enterprise skills such as Aiming High and Leading through Enabling Enterprise projects since Spring 2014. Last year, they took on the role of police detectives during the Crime Scene challenge day.

This year, a lucky few students from Year 4 have already been on a business trip to Multiplex Bishopsgate and to law firm McMillan Williams. Today, Key Stage 2 pupils took on a new enterprise challenge.

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

During the launch assembly, students were introduced to a big challenge: to set up a new society on a distant moon called Utopia! They began by exploring the world of work in a team quiz. Then, they further applied their Working in a Team skills by deciding on a new crew of people from different areas of industry. Next, teams demonstrated their Using Imagination skills by designing a brand new species of animal to benefit their new society in a variety of ways. Finally, students took on the roles of architects and builders by budgeting, designing and constructing a 3D city map from scratch!

The Results:

Throughout the day, students in each class demonstrated excellent Problem Solving skills by identifying, discussing and collaboratively finding a solution to each problem they faced. They used detailed language to Share Ideas with each other and Listened Carefully to each team member in turn. Their final presentations were polished and professional, highlighting the very best features of their city creations!

What they said:

  • “For the next 2 weeks I will be teaching 2D and 3D shapes with the aim of designing and rebuilding our cities more accurately. The children are so motivated by the prospect of improving their cities – the learning goes on!!” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “I used staying positive when I couldn’t work out how to construct my building. My team helped me to not give up!” – Student, Year 3

Well done to everyone who was involved.
