The School: Chingford CofE Primary

Chinford CofE Primary is a two form entry primary school that has been working in partnership with Enabling Enterprise for the past few years. Already this year, Year 4 and Year 5 have explored the busy retail world, on two exciting enterprise trips to Westfield Stratford and Argos in Leytonstone. To kick start their enterprise programme back in school, Year 4 and Year 5 are taking on the Day in Politics challenge.

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

Today’s challenge sees teams of students transform into young MPs. In their teams, students learn about parliament, politicians and political parties through a series of challenging activities. After a whole class debate on a topic of their choice, teams take a closer look at their own political parties, writing manifestos, deciding on their party colours and designing a logo. The hustings are perfect opportunity for teams to share their ideas and practice the art of persuasion.

The Results:

From the outset, it was clear that these students were ready to take on the challenge of setting up their own political parties. The teams weren’t afraid to get stuck into tricky conversations dealing with really mature and complex issues around government spending and vulnerable groups. Across the classes, it was lovely to witness how the students went about Sharing Ideas and Listening Carefully to each other: there was an exceptionally high level of respect amongst the teams.

At the end of the day, we saw presentations from political parties with a wide range of focus areas plans to support the environment to manifestos looking toward a brighter future. Once the votes were counted, the teams cheered and applauded the elected parties, demonstrating the importance of Staying Positive regardless of whether or not you are the winner.

What they said:

  • “It’s been really great and the children have been so engaged all day – and they’ve learnt so much about politics and parliament” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “They are so involved in the debate and really passionate about what they’re saying – it’s great to see” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “Sometimes I think I put limits on my imagination because I don’t want things to go all wrong and crazy but today we got to do it all from scratch and made all the decisions” – Student, Year 5
  • “I learnt that only 66% of people voted in the election because it is a good way to decide things. I thought it would have been more because if they don’t share their opinion then how do we know if the right person is in charge?” – Student, Year 5
  • “I think we have been really brave today coming up with all these ideas to say in front of the class”- Student, Year 4

Well done to everyone who was involved.
