The School: Lavender Primary School

Lavender Primary School in Enfield are dedicated to developing their student enterprise skills throughout the school through Enabling Enterprise projects and Challenge Days. This year the Year 5 classes will each be visiting a different business: this time it was to BBC Worldwide in Shepherds Bush.

The Business: BBC Worldwide, London

BBC Worldwide Limited is the main commercial arm and a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). They have offices all over the world and work to sell channels such as BBC Earth to different countries. The Lavender students were joined by 3 volunteers from BBC Worldwide to support them in Working in a Team and Problem Solving on their enterprise challenge.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The teams learnt how large organisations such as the BBC have many different departments, from Advertising to Finance, Catering to Community and Sustainability. Today they would take on the role of recruiters from the BBC’s Human Resources Department. There were 3 vacancies available and the teams had to quickly understand what was required for these roles, work out what makes the perfect BBC employee and then carefully select the best 3 candidates from 6 interviews. At the end of the day, the teams presented their ideas to a panel of judges, many of which were from the HR department.

The Results:

The teams quickly transformed into HR departments, including ‘Mr Maf’s Recruitment’ and ‘BBC Employers’, Working in a Team and listening to each other was imperative to help them take on the Problem Solving that was required. Teams disagreed on some aspects of the importance of skills vs knowledge when selecting the right person for the finance manager and many agreed that resilience is something that you can learn. With this fantastic insight, the teams prepared their presentations. We were lucky to be joined by a panel of judges who included the BBC’s very own HR department. The students were nervous but showed great confidence when they presented their ideas and each and every student was praised for their fantastic reasoning. It was particularly impressive to see some students Aiming High to present without notes and plenty of eye contact! A huge well done to all the Year 5 students who took on the Recruitment Race Challenge and succeeded!

What they said:

  • “I am so proud of every single one of the children today, it’s been brilliant!” – Teacher, Lavender Primary School
  • “Come back and see me in 20 years’ time and if I’m still here I would happily give you all a job!” – Volunteer from HR, BBC Worldwide
  • “Today I found the presentation most challenging but it is also the thing I am most proud of.” – Y5 Student, Lavender Primary School

Thanks to BBC Worldwide for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Lavender Primary School for coming along.
