The School: Lilian Baylis Technology School

Based in Lambeth, Lilian Baylis have been developing a programme of enterprise education with Enabling Enterprise since 2012-13. Their students have been honing in on eight core enterprise skills not only in class, through Lesson-Time Projects such as ‘Modern Marketing’, but also outside the classroom on a range of employer visits to top businesses across London. Today it was the turn of these Year 8 students to enter the world of civil law and put their Listening and Understanding and Presenting skills to the test as they took on the role of top legal teams.

The Business: Freshfields, London

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP is a leader among international law firms and is a member of the Magic Circle of elite British law firms. Founded in 1743, it is a multinational law firm head-quartered in London, providing business law advice of the highest quality throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the US.

Today, our students were joined by fantastic volunteers Beth and Emma who helped to give an insight into the world of law and the different roles that can be found within a law firm. The teams were also keen to find out more about the paths that our volunteers and other Freshfields employees had taken in their careers and, with one eye already firmly on the future, were especially excited to hear about Freshfields’ work experience opportunities!

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

Following a tour around the offices and a chance to see lawyers, solicitors and researchers from different departments in action on various cases, the children were ready to take on the role of lawyers themselves!

Back in the boardroom, each team took on a client that they were going to represent and advocate on behalf of. Whether they were protecting bird habitats from a new railway being built, or fighting for a film to be made in a local housing estate, they all had research to do to find their strongest arguments and put together a compromise that could be agreed upon by both parties involved.

The Results:

Each team worked hard to analyse the information, Present their ideas on the case and Listen and Understand one another’s suggestions. They thought carefully about how they could argue their case for their clients and ensure they could win them their case!
It was impressive to see the children put together their arguments for the tough negotiation at the end of the day. Facing the opposing team, who would manage to find a compromise that worked for both teams?

With strong counter arguments to their opposing teams’ concerns, the teams thought about how to reach a compromise, realising how hard it can be to find a satisfactory resolution to appease all parties! Everyone should be proud of what they achieved in such a short space of time – becoming true lawyers with their passion, presentation and Problem Solving skills.

What they said:

  • “I thought I wanted to be a lawyer before I came here, but now I know that I definitely want to be a lawyer!” – Student, Lilian Baylis
  • “Their arguments were structured very well and each team was able to summarise their client’s main arguments in a clear way that also showed their passion.” – Volunteer, Freshfields
  • “Before we can here today, I thought that it was only lawyers who worked at a law firm but I was surprised to learn that there are also catering staff, researchers, CSR and even people working in social media. Today, I have seen that you can do a wide range of jobs and still work somewhere like this.” – Student, Lilian Baylis

Thanks to Freshfields for such a great trip day, and to Year 8 from Lilian Baylis for coming along and making it so memorable.
