The School: Kingsbury Green Primary

Students at Kingsbury Green Primary have been working with Enabling Enterprise to develop students’ enterprise skills since 2014. In the past, students have taken part in various trips and Challenge Days, including the Greetings Card Challenge with Year 1.

Soon, students in Years 4 and 5 will take part in the Day in Politics Challenge Day, during which they will apply their Sharing Ideas skills to set up their very own political parties. Today, thirty lucky students from Year 4 ventured out of school to apply their enterprise skills in a retail-themed challenge.

The Business: Hammerson, London

Founded in 1942, Hammerson plc is a major British property development and investment company. A FTSE 100 company with a portfolio of retail property in the UK and France of around £7.7 billion, including 22 prime shopping centres, 22 convenient retail parks and investments in 15 premium designer outlet villages.

The Challenge: Retail Revelations

Inspired by the work of Hammerson and the magnificent views across London from their Kings Cross headquarters, students took on the role of retail property developers and Worked in Teams to design a brand new shopping centre to be built in the heart of Brent Cross, London. They began by deciding on a theme that would inspire the design. Then, they Used Imagination to design technology that would engage shoppers and help them through their shopping experience. Finally, students thought of ways to include cultural attractions, such as performance areas and skate parks, to increase footfall through the shopping centre.

The Results:

At the end of a busy day, teams took it in turns to present their ideas to a panel of judges, including one of the team working on the real life Brent Cross shopping mall development. They applied their learnings from school to create a series of persuasive and confident presentations that showed off the best parts of their designs.

Volunteers were impressed with how well students Listened Carefully to each other and Used Imagination to bring their ideas to life!

What they said:

  • “I’ve been so impressed by what they’ve done today and their presentations. From when they walked into the office this morning, they’ve really been thinking about how to be professional and it has made them step up” – Teacher, Kingsbury Green School
  • “I really liked being part of my team and doing all our work together. We didn’t even mind when we were running out of time because we knew we had lots of people to do it.” – Student, Kingsbury Green Primary School

Thanks to Hammersons for such a great trip day, and to Year 4 from Kingsbury Green for coming along.
