The School: Ash Green School & Arts College

Ash Green School & Arts College have incorporated their first Enabling Enterprise visits of late into their recent careers week and ‘future focus’ activities, giving their students a greater insight into the world of work, the opportunities available to them and the essential skills they will need for successful careers, whatever their chosen pathways.

The Business: IBM Warwick

IBM, founded in 1911, is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world, with operations in 170 different countries and over 380,000 employees globally. It now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems and is a major research organisation, constantly evolving and innovating.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

A very warm welcome from IBM volunteers and encouragement to approach the day as young professionals appealed to the highly engaged and motivated group of Year 10 students from Ash Green – who quickly ‘got in role’, introducing themselves and quizzing the ‘IBMers’ about their jobs, responsibilities and the skills they needed to draw upon in the workplace. A tour of some of the facilities enabled the teams to identify potential barriers faced by the employees when communicating with colleagues and clients and so with the challenge brief shared: to design an app to aid communication for employees at the IBM, teams responded efficiently to demonstrate their solution focussed approaches.

The Results:

Working to tight deadlines, teams collaborated to communicate clearly their creative app ideas. Final presentations highlighted just how cohesive the teams had been throughout the day and left the IBM Expert judges with a difficult task themselves!

What they said:

  • “It’s good that what they’re doing is really relevant to the company and the workplace as it has real meaning for the students.” – Teacher, Ash Green School & Arts College
  • “I can go back to the classroom and refer back to this, using real world links in my teaching.” – Teacher, Ash Green School & Arts College
  • “I will definitely volunteer with Enabling Enterprise again… I have really enjoyed working with this great group of students – they have really impressed me with their attitude and the creative solutions they had for the apps. They would work!” – Volunteer, IBM
  • “We listened to all communication the problems the employees have at IBM and came to the conclusion that seeing all messages clearly was a priority so decided to focus on that. Throughout the day, we improved our teamwork and learnt to compromise, working well together in our group.” – Student, Ash Green School & Arts College

Thanks to IBM volunteers for their expertise and energy on the trip day, and to Year 10 from Ash Green School & Arts College for their engagement. It was a pleasure to work with you all.
