The School: Coopers School

Coopers Technology College in Bromley is an Enabling Enterprise Secondary School. This year they are continuing to develop key enterprise skills in their students through Challenge Days and trips to top London businesses. Today a lucky few Year 10 and Year 12 students were selected as winners from their recent Chocolate Challenge: they joined forces in the world of work, readier than ever to take on a legal case.

The Business: Baker & McKenzie, London

Baker McKenzie is an international law firm employing over 4,000 lawyers across 47 countries. Their clients range from global firms, including Sony and British Airways, to high net-worth individuals, including professional footballers. The mixed teams were joined by employees from various departments within Baker & McKenzie, legal and non-legal, including IT and HR.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

The teams began their day with an introduction to Baker & McKenzie followed by an insightful tour of the premises, including the tech support team, as well as various offices and teams of employees they were able to interview on the way. After learning about the differences between civil and criminal law, the students quickly demonstrated that Listening and Understanding was their forte in today’s challenge. They were then introduced to their clients and took on the role of aspiring lawyers, solicitors and negotiators for the day while Working in a Team to prepare their case.

The Results:

Throughout the whole challenge, students were Aiming High as they worked to tight deadlines. It was imperative that each team used persuasive language when Presenting to the judges and their peers in order to reach a compromise. There was so much determination from all teams that teachers and judges alike had a tough job trying to decide which team had the edge over the others. All adults were impressed by the quality of the enterprising lawyers’ arguments and ability to think on their feet!

What they said:

  • “The day flowed really well and the tour was impressive. The staff was welcoming and interacted well with all students. I think the students gained a lot by being taken out of their comfort zone – it gave them a boost in self-confidence and communication skills.” – Head of Year 10, Coopers
  • “The scenarios were quite good.” – Volunteer, Baker & McKenzie
  • “I liked how they were very enthusiastic and very engaged.” – Volunteer, Baker & McKenzie
  • “Where do I find out more about corporate law?” – Year 12 Student, Coopers
  • “The tour has made me want to work here. I’ve asked them if I could do an apprenticeship here.” – Year 10 Student, Coopers

Thanks to Baker & McKenzie for such a fantastic trip day, and to Years 10 and 12 from Coopers Technology College and for coming along.
