The School: The Alderton Junior School
The Alderton Junior School in Loughton have worked with Enabling Enterprise for several years to develop their students’ enterprise skills. The students have already taken part in a whole-school Challenge Day called “Creative Spaces” where students had to design and build a community arts centre from scratch using their Working in a Team and Using Imagination skills.
The Business: Societe Generale, London
Societe Generale is a French multinational banking and financial services company head-quartered in Paris. They are one of the largest European financial services groups. As a universal bank, Societe Generale not only offers Retail Banking in France but also International Banking, Financial Services and Corporate and Investment Banking, worldwide. The Year 5 students were lucky enough to be joined by 4 volunteers across the day who spoke to them about their jobs and took them on a brilliant tour of the offices, including a soon-to-be trading floor with an amazing view!
The Challenge: Trading Triumphs
The Year 5 Alderton Junior students were split into teams to take on the roles of traders for the day, practising their Problem Solving as they made fast-paced trading decisions based on up-to-the-minute news and Staying Positive when the markets did not work in their favour! The students interviewed the Societe Generale staff and brought back all the inspiration they got from viewing the future trading floor, Working in a Team to analyse information from a number of sources before making their trades.
The Year 5 students worked really hard to make as much return as possible for their client Dr Taylor before presenting their reports to the judges. It was brilliant to see each team Sharing Ideas so confidently and using such great persuasive language in their presentations!
What they said:
- “The children developed different skills throughout the day – particularly working in a team – and they have a better understanding of finance, too! “- Teacher, The Alderton Junior School
- “It was really great to see the teams applying the skills and enjoying themselves as well: even the shyer students got up to present!” – Volunteer, Societe Generale
- “We’re the best traders in town because we have stayed positive even when losing money and have always thought about what we could do better next.” – Student, The Alderton Junior School
Thanks to Societe Generale for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from The Alderton Junior School for coming along.
