The School: St Fidelis Catholic Primary
Students at St Fidelis Catholic Primary in Bexley, South East London have been working with Enabling Enterprise to develop their enterprise skills since 2016. So far this year, children in Key Stage 1 have taken part in the Crime Scene Challenge Day and have set up their very own Community Café.
This term, Years 3 and 4 have been working together in mixed-age teams to set up their own chocolate brands. Today, thirty-two lucky Year 4 students ventured out of the classroom to Canary Wharf to get involved in a new enterprise challenge.
The Business: JLL, London
Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated, or JLL, is a professional services and investment management company specialising in real estate. JLL employ more than 58,000 people in more than 1,000 locations in 80 countries. Alongside construction, development and property management, JLL also offers a range of financial services.
For today’s enterprise challenge, employees from across the company, including IT, Retail Property and Finance, joined St Fidelis students to offer expert advice and share how they use enterprise skills such as Staying Positive and Using Imagination in their day-to-day jobs.
Putting their enterprise skills to the test, students were set the challenge of designing a new development to occupy a brownfield site in the town of Bogsby. To succeed, students had to research the needs of the community and apply their imagination, Problem Solving and Sharing Ideas skills to create a 3D representation of their idea.
With every team thinking about all the different members of the community they were trying to help, they demonstrated excellent Using Imagination skills, and showed they had listened to everyone. Under the pressure of presenting their ideas to the panel of judges from JLL, the teams showed confidence and professionalism. With ideas about combining community centres with sports centres or ensuring that there was a school for young people, every team had a valid and thoughtful design. Reflecting on the skills they had developed, each team – quite rightly – felt particularly proud when Sharing Ideas so effectively.
What they said:
- ” We have been very impressed with the quality of the volunteers today, they have all been extremely informative and amazing with interacting with the children. The children have all been engaged in the activities and especially enjoyed creating their designs into 3D models. Thank you!” – Teacher, St Fidelis Catholic Primary
- “It’s all been great. We always have plenty of volunteers lined up to work with each event. Everything is explained well and its always fun to watch the children grow in confidence throughout the day.” – Volunteer, JLL
- “I’ve improved my confidence by speaking to the judges. I think these are definitely skills that I will use in my life as I get older.” – Student, St Fidelis Catholic Primary
Thanks to JLL for such a great trip day, and to Year 4 from St Fidelis Catholic Primary for coming along.
