The School: Riverley Primary School

Riverley Primary School in Waltham Forest is an Enabling Enterprise Primary School. This year they are developing key enterprise skills in their students through projects such as Year 3’s Trash to Treasure project, where students make new toys from recycled materials.

The Business: UBS, London

UBS is a global bank, providing services in over 50 countries. Specialising in Wealth Management and Global Asset Management they provide services for high net worth individuals, private, corporate, and institutional clients all over the world. Worldwide, UBS employs 60,099 people who speak more than 130 languages and are citizens of 135 countries.

Today, John, a finance director from UBS, joined Riverley students to help them with their challenge.

The Challenge:

The students Worked in Teams for a client to invest their money in a fast-paced trading challenge. The students did the best they could with the clients’ money, listening to changes occurring on the “stock market” and reacting effectively. They had to factor in the global element of trading on the stock market, and use a range of skills such as Listening Carefully and Problem Solving to gather important information and make key decisions at various points throughout the day.

The Results:

This fast-paced challenge certainly tested all of the young entrepreneurs – they needed to take calculated risks, demonstrating their ability to Stay Positive as the stock market fluctuated. Utilising their Maths knowledge from school effectively, each team was able to check their calculations, confident that Dr Taylor would be happy with the return on her investment! UBS volunteers were extremely impressed with the children as they awarded enterprise points throughout the challenge and for the content of each team’s final presentation to their client.

What they said:

  • “I’m really pleased to have volunteered in something that can widen the children’s experiences.” – John, UBS
  • “We took turns to make sure we all stayed positive; and if we couldn’t agree, we had a vote in our team.” – Student, Riverley

Thanks to UBS for such a great trip day, and to Year 3 from Riverley for coming along.
