The School: Gilbertstone Primary School
Gilbertstone Primary School in Yardley, South Birmingham, has been an Enabling Enterprise Partner School for over three years, recognising the importance of providing opportunities for their children to develop essential skills that will stand them in good stead during their school years and beyond. This year they are focusing on key enterprise skills such as Sharing Ideas and Listening Carefully through projects such as Brilliant Books and Number Crunching. The whole school from Reception through to Year 6 used their ever developing enterprise skills during their Future Transport Challenge Day last term, but this time it was a special challenge for Year 3 to utilise their skills as they took up part in an exciting enterprise visit to Royal HaskoningDHV!
The Business: Royal HaskoningDHV
Royal HaskoningDHV is an independent, international engineering and project management consultancy with over 130 years of experience. They deliver services in the fields of aviation, buildings, energy, industry, infrastructure, maritime, mining, transport, urban and rural planning and water – so it was fascinating for the 7 and 8 year olds to learn more about the varied job roles there are and what each department does.
After finding out about the employees of Royal HaskoningDHV and an exciting tour around the office floor, pupils embarked on the challenge of using their creativity and Working in a Team skills to design and create a new building on a disused space in the fictional town of ‘Bogsby’. Team members needed to use their Leading skills throughout the day and sought solutions to the problem of how to incorporate the whole community’s wants and needs into the redevelopment plan, as well as thinking about creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly build.
Enterprise skills were on show throughout the whole day! After designing and making their Brilliant Builds, teams planned a presentation and pitched their builds to the expert panel of judges from Royal HaskoningDHV. They used fantastic Presenting skills and listened carefully to each other’s ideas. It was excellent to see pupils Aiming High with their designs, inspired by the 3D plans they had seen in the office in the morning. At the end of the day, pupils thoughtfully reflected on the skills they used and which skills they wanted to get better at when they got back to school.
What they said:
- “It’s been a fantastic opportunity for the children to experience an environment they wouldn’t normally see. It’s especially great for our girls to get involved in trips like this – it really opens their eyes. It’s given all of the children an insight into engineering, and other jobs that they might not have been aware of before today.” – Teacher, Gilbertstone Primary School
- “I was impressed by how the children stayed engaged throughout the whole day. Days like this are really important to show children that these skills matter! I’ll definitely volunteer again!” – Volunteer, Royal HaskoningDHV
- “I was proud of how we worked together and stayed positive when we didn’t always agree.” – Student, Gilbertstone Primary School
- “Before today I didn’t really know how to be a good leader but now I know that I should make sure everyone in the group us always included.” – Student, Gilbertstone Primary School
Thanks to Royal HaskoningDHV for such a great trip day, and to Year 3 students and staff from Gilbertstone Primary School for their energy and enthusiasm throughout.
