The School: Newport School

Leyton-based Newport School have been working with Enabling Enterprise for the fourth year running to develop eight core Enterprise Skills in their students. They have been expanding their understanding of these skills through a range of Lesson-Time Projects and Challenge Days such as ‘A Day in Politics’. The Year 5 students coming along today were ready to show off how they were at Working in a Team in the world of work on this financial challenge.

The Business: J.P. Morgan, Knightsbridge, London

J.P. Morgan is a global leader in financial services, offering solutions to the world’s most important corporations, governments and institutions in more than 100 countries. Today an array of volunteers were on hand to help the budding entrepreneurs hone in on Problem Solving and Staying Positive. Let’s find out how they got on.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

The Newport students began by interviewing the J.P. Morgan volunteers, quizzing them about their role and how they use the enterprise in their day-to-day job. The mixed teams of 9- and 10-year olds then learnt about the Stock Exchange before taking on the role of Stock Market Traders. The trading teams, including ‘JP Dragons’ and ‘Tip Top Traders’, were introduced to their client who asked them to wisely invest an initial £25,000 on her behalf. Each group used their Listening Carefully skills and made notes on their client’s needs before conducting research on four companies they could potentially invest in.

The Results:

As the day progressed, the teams were Sharing Ideas about the different companies and the information they’d heard about the volatile stock market. With support from the J.P. Morgan volunteers and their expertise, the teams were able to complete three separate trades before calculating the return they had successfully made for their client. There were many occasions where Staying Positive was crucial to the work of each team and the students reflected on the importance of this skill in each of their groups. At the end of the day, each team impressed the panel of judges in a round of confident presentations, including their professional use of the AV equipment! They were able to communicate with persuasive language how they had used Problem Solving to make group decisions and an overall return.

What they said:

  • “As always, an improved focus on the eight skills of enterprise. It is absolutely joyful to see them succeeding with such novel and challenging concepts.” – Teacher, Newport
  • “You all spoke very clearly and confidently – I really loved the way you all presented. Also, through the day you showed great leadership qualities to problem solve as a team and come to the right decisions.” – Volunteer, J.P. Morgan
  • “When I was nervous, my team was with me and made me feel more confident – and that’s what’s called teamwork!” – Student, Newport School

Thanks to J.P. Morgan for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Newport School for coming along.
