The Schools: Southwood Primary School

Southwood Primary School in Barking & Dagenham is an Enabling Enterprise Primary School in their second year. This year they will be developing key enterprise skills in their students through lesson time projects which will be run as an exciting enterprise week. Later this year they will be further developing these skills through an all-day challenge.

The Business: Costain Skanska, London

Costain Skanska is a joint venture between Costain Group and Skanska AB, two constructions and civil engineering companies working on the Crossrail project. Projects on the build have included: civil engineering, advanced works, ticket hall fit-outs, the constructions of stations; as well as 30 metre deep shafts to house ventilation facilities and emergency exits.

The Challenge:

Students began by exploring the world of construction and meeting volunteers from different areas of the business to find out more about how they use enterprise skills in their work. Then, split into teams, they must decide on the best use for a re-development site. Along the way the students considered the needs of the local community, building regulations as well as environmental issues. This fast paced challenge culminated with students presenting to a planning committee made up of volunteers from Costain Skanska.

The Results:

Showing great Leading and Using Imagination skills, the teams were quick to design and build their visions of Bogsby town centre. Different teams valued certain voices and concerns of the community, providing the judges with a vast variety of plans and developments. The judges were very impressed by the standards of the presentations and redevelopments plans. Well done to every team for their hard work and fantastic Aiming High skills.

What they said:

  • “This task is perfect for these kids. It is so hands-on and interactive.” – Teacher, Southwood Primary
  • “They had some great ideas, but I was most convinced by their pitch, what a great performance they put on!” – Volunteer, Costain Skanska
  • “We have worked as a team to support each other to stay positive.” – Student, Southwood Primary

Thanks to Costain Skanska for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Southwood Primary School for coming along.
